If that's the case Al then simply rewire the exciter wire via the ignition switch with an in line fuse. Something is clearly breaking down in the original part of the loom.

Have you had a look inside the solenoid? Not sure you can dismantle on the 33 but if you're getting 12v on the exciter then maybe that tends to a solenoid problem?

Maybe also an amperage problem? ...

I'd go with what Dick says Al. Replace that wiring. Even if it doesn't solve the problem it's going to stop you having a mahoosive fire where your beloved 33 once stood.

Not good. Surprised it failed without some kind of warning. Scary.

Re the fuel line. Could you soften the end with boiling water? I have a wooden cone I use for stretching such pipes.
