I'm about to do my head, finally, as the weather is getting better and was thinking about doing the water pump. Now you’re all probably going to shout "yer do it!!" but I was wondering what the mmtf of a water pump is and will mine last another cam belt change interval or should I change it? Now you’re all probably saying "it varies, I’ve heard stories of someone never having to change theirs and the complete opposite"

Don't know how old my one was when it failed. Older than three years.
I do know the pump is pretty cheap but the removal can be very difficult. I had one garage smash the water pump up with a chisel to get it out.

Well the pump is going on my girlfriend's series 2 (nice rumbling sound), so I'm going to have to do it over the next couple of weeks. You're welcome to come over and see what fun it is, Alan, if you want Smile

Depends on what miles are on the clock. If you're doing heads and presumably belts then think seriously about the pump. Here in NZ a standard pump is around $47 and a performance one about $67. At about 40P to our dollar you can do the math, but it's not a lot if you want no worries.

I've done a few in my life, all on 8v, 1 was easy the other not so. I had to smash it out, so not worried about the extraction/replacement process. Thanks Paul I’d love to, even if it’s just to give support, help or watch but I remember you saying before to coax it out gently by tapping on a wooden block, slowly but surely.
I’ve had this car coming up for 2 years now, I guess I should ask the previous owner if and when the pump was changed Embarassed

They're all right. Jamming is common. Mine leaked last month. Lasted less than 2 belt change.

2 belt changes, anyone got any more stats like this from experience or from fellow 33 owners?
I only owned 1 33 which kept the original engine its entire life and I can’t remember when it failed and when the pump was last done. The others had several engine changes so I didn’t know the history.

In my country two types of pump available. The magneti marrelli one is double the price. I'm pretty sure this one easily outlast 2 belt change. As mentioned, even if last for 3, there's risk of jamming.

Hi all,

Mine lasted 13 years but i had it replaced as I was doing the belts in the same time. There were no traces of leak but I thought that 13 years are very many so I replaced it without much thought. The new one is a Marelli pump costing around 40 € in early 2004.

Quality coolant is the key factor in pump life. In case you use "colored" water then rust develops and will surely ruin the seals of the shaft. Good quality coolant with rust inhibitors surely give life to the pump.

In the 147 the pump gave up the ghost within 4 years Confused

The impeller is plastic and the metal shaft separated from the impeller resulting in overheat. Luckily no damage was done to the gasket.

Long time since I had to change either of mine (33 and Sprint).

I'm hoping the good cleaning of the bore and the coating of grease I put on it will make the next removal easier.

Only had one pump fail on the 33's that I have had. But when I have done a engine rebuild or recently a clutch (bearing and pressure plate failure) and belts/tensioners change, I put a new pump in anyway. In the last instance the engine/gearbox was out and the belts/tensioners were due, so it was only really the cost of the pump. Hopefully that has saved the hassle of doing it for a long time.
