If you want to hang onto your cars you'd better sign this and
pass the word on:

Yes - thanks for this Paul.

I've signed it... and so should everyone on here - if you live in UK.

Whilst this is NOT in direct response to a government plan at present, there are attempts to start this in some other countries. A large "turnout" here would make our government think twice about this should they decide to discuss in the future.

My opinion :

1. Classic cars are part of our heritage and history. Who would think about pulling down listed buildings because their 'energy ratings' are less than modern? Based on that we should destroy the house of commons, Big Ben, castles, stately homes, Buckingham Palace etc...

2. Not everyone can afford cars less than 10 years old!

3. These 'initiatives' are all very well (for those who don't care about older cars) whilst the UK economy is doing well. If we went into recession in the future older, cheaper cars would become the workhorse of the UK economy. There would be a massive call for these cars which would become what most people could afford. Are we going to take all these cars and just scrap them? It's like the old arguement about foreign workers coming to fill the current glut of jobs... that's ok WHILE we have a glut of jobs - if the economy downturns - these are tomorrow's unemployed, rioting, stealing problem.

(Just a note here to say, I'm not a Xenophobe... but that's how I see things could go)

Bob

Hi,

Signed it.

Yep, it looks like they'd rather more dirty great SUVs were produced to replace our lightweight classic cars.

I'm sure my 14 year old catted 33 produces less alleged 'green house' gasses per mile than the wifes relatives new Volvo XC90 and Land Rover Discovery.

Hopefully there are still some influential old-school duffers in the houses of parliment and lords, with E-types and old Astons tucked away.

Done It.
Same thing happened in Germany and they had to do a U-Turn on their policy to get rid of the older car.

I signed as well and passed onto a few friends, maybe the government should think of improving emissions on old cars by subsidising lpg modifications

I think the government should just f'off until they find some proof that it's not just a climate cycle which has nothing to with mankind.

Have a look here - http://www.ceda.co.uk/article8.html found on google.

It looks like the government may have tightened up or even withdrawn the grants. Seeing as they get about 80p a litre (of petrol) off us in duty and VAT, they probably don't want too many LPG conversions in truth.

Hi

Given the nasty rules coming in for vans in London (ie, anything but pretty much the newest ones getting hit for a £200 a day charge), expect older cars to be hammered at some point.

All the best

Keith

Also "they" never factor in the fact that a new car takes many many years to make the greenhouse gases created by its production, raw materials, transportation to country of eventual sale etc. average less per year than those of an existing car kept on the road.

Its footprint will probably never catch up with that of an existing car before it is scrapped because no-one can sort out its electronic problems for a reasonable price.

The crazy thing here is - the prime minister is *supposed* to represent us. BUT... I'm pretty sure he can't drive having never passed the driving test.

Hi guys,

Reviving this old post as the measure to ban older cars unfortunately is implemented in Greece.

Cars older than 1/1/1996 will be charged with 150 € per year in excess of the already existing annual charges.

Moreover the cars falling in the above category, will be banned to circulate in the city centre as a red sticker will be placed on the windscreen meaning that the car is pollutant for the city centre.

It looks like a measure to further increase the revenue of the state income, boost the sales of new cars now that the economy is supposingly in recession, all in the context of "green city centre" Rolling Eyes

Regards,

Yes it is complete trollops and just making money out of people as the emissions created by the production of a new car far outweigh running an old car for a few years. IT IS GREENER TO USE THE OLD CARS.
