Hi
I am new to this board and needed some help.
I have a 1994 33 16V which has not been driven for the last 7 years!
I have finally decided to get it up and running again as the car is in perfect condition-no rust at all and only has 37,000 on the clock.
What i needed to know is what service parts do i need to pay speciel attention to- as the car has been dormant for so long.
Also what engine and brake fluid would you recomend-i have willwood 4 pots front and rear.
It is a car i have spent thousands of pounds on both internally and external but is sadly neglected.

Any help to get this beast on the road would be greatly appreciated

Welcome along.

Please post some pictures of your car!

Has the car been completely dormant, or has the motor been run regularly etc?

General service items would be oil, air and fuel filter. For 16v use fully or semi synthetic oil. Platinum plugs on late 16v should be good for 60,000 miles.

After 7 years of non use there may be issues of tyres worn flat, petrol off, and brake cylinders may give up the ghost etc etc.

Sounds like another 33s back , cool and at 37k a real low mileage. Anyway I would do the regular oil and filter change, drain any fuel and replace with new but only to flush out the tank and lines when satisfied the fill up with fresh. As for the brake and clutch fluid I was advised to stick to dot 4 fluid. I have used high temp synthetic stuff but at £49 quid a litre you need 2 bottles minimum to flush out the old. I would also drain the coolant and flush the system out and replace the thermostat.When all is back together and ready to run disconnect the coil or distributor and turn the engine over for 30seconds until the oil pressure light goes out just to make the dry parts of the engine get some oil before you re-connect and fire the car up for the first time. When you fire it up I'm sure you know to let it warm up til the fan kicks in just to check for leaks then a test run is in order.Good look and post some pictures. Razz

Turn the engine over several times by hand before cranking it.

Brake pistons are likely to be stuck in cylinders, possibly corroded in place. You should check them anyway and replace the fluid.

Check all hoses for deterioration, especially brakes.

Water pump seal may be stuck.

Injectors may be stuck. If the engine is misfiring for this reason they can be checked by removing them, still connected to the manifold, and allowed to spray into containers at while cranking the engine. They should all give a fine cone shaped mist. They can sometimes be freed by tapping them gently with a spanner or similar small object. If not they can be cleaned and tested.

Don't want to be a parrot but deff get those cam-belts changed, use my recent "whoops" as a good example. My sportwagon had only covered 40 miles in a 12 month period, last wednesday on a trip to Devon the belts died after 32 miles on the motorway. Now having a different engine put in.

As for the timing belt i have searched on ebay and found 2 made by Gates.

One is a complete kit and the other just the belt.
Would it be advisable to go for the complete kit and is the price a good one.

Hi,

You should do the tensioners too.

I got dayco belts from camskill.co.uk, but had quite a job getting skf tensioners elsewhere recently, so gates kit may be best option. Try googling/ froogling the parts number of gates kit, you may find it cheaper.

Finally got the car into AlfaMania (West London)for a full check up
The place is run by 2 guys called Massimo and Tony who are very friendly and seem very knowledgable about all things Alfa.

Told them im in no rush as iv waited almost 8 years so now waiting for the results.
Hopefully all should be fine but it is an Alfa so im prepered for the worst lol

Will keep you guys informed of the progress

Hi,
Besides usual cambelts,tensioners and water pump changes
from my own experiance it is very likely that at least one piston ring will stick to its piston. Running engine for prolonged time with stuck ring will lead to premature ring wear/flat spot and after it if you continue driving piston head can hit engine block and wear/tear also.
I don't know any way of making sure this doesn't happen without opening engine and once it's open there is lot of work to get it all back.

Once serviced i am hoping to get this car upto concourse levels- its in very good condition as it is
Another thing i would love to do is get A/C fitted.
Has anyone ever done this and if so do you know of any places that can do this job?

Hi

The 33 did have air conditioning in some markets but not the UK. Suspect you will struggle to find someone to install an a/c system these days, and the cost would be hideous.

I've had 3 33's with air-con, all were 16v sportwagons. If you want some tips on fitting it then contact Rich B. He is currently doing it to his 16v. There is lots envolved, i still have some of the parts here, pump, mounting brackets, control panel ect.

I had a marine refrigeration and aircon business for 20 years, but refused to work on road vehicle systems, even for my best customers. They have too many inherent faults and weaknesses, besides being unhealthy, wasting power and really being quite unnecessary in Europe.

I would never have aircon in a car - unless I hired it.
