I know this is "car chat" - but I wondered if anyone on here has a motorbike? (I know you do Keith)

I'm looking at selling my Rover, using my 33 occasionally and getting a bike/scooter/proper motorbike to do the school run and go to work or whatever....

HOWEVER - how goddamn confusing is the whole thing? I have a full car licence since 1992 which has a ream of entitlements on it, some full, some provisional and then the rules.... AGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

I can't understand a word of it! Why the hell are the rules sooooo complex when it comes to understanding which bikes you can ride and what you need to do to progress?

I believe you can ride a 125cc bike with L plates for 2 years then you have to do your CBT part 1 and 2, then after passing the 2 parts of the test your entitled to a 600cc bike for a year or so (i think) and then anysize after that...................................Im waiting for the comments to tell me how wrong I am now.

Bob what the hell posessed you to own a rover??? Rolling Eyes sell it anyway!!! Then again you may have to pay someone to take it off your hands Laughing

Dont you have to do a small competance test before you can ride any bike over 50cc restricted?

Bob,

If you can afford it, do a direct access course. Not only will you get decent training, you'll learn on a proper bike (500cc), take the test on the 500cc bike then when you pass you can ride anything.

At least that's how it was, there may have been some changes and so oggie is probably spot on. They've certainly changed the test in the last year or two including a contreversial high speed swerve that has resulted in quite a few broken bones on test.

this also confuses me, i used to ride a 125 back in the 90's when delivering pizza's lol on my licence which i got in 1988.
It all got changes about 2 years ago where you had to do a CBT to even ride a 50 cc, now you have to do the full bike test to ride anything bigger. I believe you used to be able to ride up to a 125cc and could pass the cbt and then get on anything, lots of people got killed so they changed it, soi think, need clarification.

The CBT stands for compulsary basic training -you have to do it to ride anything on l-plates, 50cc at 16 years old, 125cc max over 16. The cbt lasts 3 years, then you have to do it again unless you've passed the practical.

CBT is very basic- machine handling skills, bit of classroom, and a quick pootle around the street- better than the nothing required when i took to the streets on my fizzy back in '85, but still not enough.

My Brother had a 80 kit on an FS1E with a micron pea shooter exhaust, it used to interfere with the tv signal when he was revving it outside the house!.

I had one of those at 14 to muck about with and ride around (mutilate) the garden.

My fizz had a 63cc kit, micron etc, i wish i still had it Rolling Eyes

'Round my way in the early- mid 80's they were all buzzing around- fizzies, suzi ap50, garelli tiger (propper fast) and even a honda ss50(4 stroke) or two. I still love the smell of two stroke fumes, takes me right back.

CBT only lasts 2 years now.

Also the laws are changing soon which will make getting a full bike licence a total nightmare (no direct access if you are under 24, and the hoops to jump through below that are hideous).

If you have had a car licence long enough then it counts as a full moped licence with no need for a CBT (although it is probably a good idea). However a moped means 50cc and 30mph max. The 50cc bit is OK, but the 30mph would be a pain (I have a little YSR50 which will with dedication hit a true 50mph).

I would say do your CBT (you certainly can't ride anything other than a moped legally without doing it) and get a 125 (you can't do even the restricted access test on any under 120cc). Get a bit of practice and then do direct access.

All the best

Keith
