My 33 series 3 1.7 8 valve is simply a joy to drive in comparison to the over engineered cars of today.I am driving it too much and am getting worried about finding shocks if need be.l have heard that the series 3 fronts are different to any other model.Any ideas

I think it's only the later Series 3, possibly only the 1.3 and 1.4's, which have different front suspension struts from the others.

Our 1991 1.7 and '86 Sprint, which used the same suspension, have the thrust bearing below the lower spring pan, so that only the part of the strut below the spring assembly rotates.

Our '93 and '94 1.3's have the thrust bearing at the top of the suspension strut, so that the whole strut assembly rotates, and the strut has 3, non symmetrically spaced, mounting bolts at the top.

I think the earlier 33's have either 4 or 5 bolts. In any case they are different in their hole spacing.

Although their struts have three mounting bolts, our 1.3's have 6 mounting holes in the body. Maybe they can also accommodate the earlier struts?

Not certain, but think all 33s from 1993 on had the later 3 mounting bolt struts, my 16v certainly has.

Cheers,

John

Hi..for what I remember..
series 3 alfa 33 (november ? 1989 - 1994) front suspensions are:

- 1989 - 1990 - 06/1991 -> 4 bolts system with coils 321mm
( coils lowered to 311mm only for 16v in the QV version)

- 07/1991 - 1992 - 1993 -> 4 bolts system with coils lowered about 10mm
( coils 311mm ) and shocks lowered about 10-20mm depending on the brand
to fit correctly the lowered coil

- 1993 - 1994 -> 3 bolts system, possibly some 16v with coils a bit lowered,
( actually a bit less simple to find shocks for 3 bolts system but still possible );
in the body car where the 3 bolts are attached there are as said 6 holes,
selecting 3 of the 6 holes permits to vary caster angle,
attaching the strut more rear (more caster, stable at high velocity, used for car with power steering)
or more advanced (less caster, used for car without power steering to make steering a bit lighter)

You can verify the correct code of your shocks reading it stamped on the lower part of the shock (turning the wheel out)
(one code specific for the right side shock and one for the left side shock)
or searching on an electronic catalogue on line your car version (google " EPER ").

Some spares of some brands/vendors on ebay unfortunately have some code corrispondence confused, so you have to verify a bit:

- the correct system (3 or 4 bolts)

- heigh of your car (normal/lowered 10mm), you can see it from year model

- about stiffness, general idea was that for every system/height,
all the 8v (1.3, 1.5, 1.7) have the same front shocks stiffness
(so you can buy spare for 1.3 or 1.7 8v and they should be the same);
only the heavier 16v have different shocks a bit more heavier/stronger (more oil inside);
maybe (not sure):
some particular models on the 4 bolts system ( 16v q.v., 16v P4, 8v 4x4 )
could have or not other specific front shocks;
instead for 3 bolts system (93-94) it seams that it is more simple,
from factory there are only two possible shocks spares,
one for all 8v (5200gr) and one for all 16v (5400gr).
