Just came across this on the Yahoo Hillman Forum
http://www.minimania.com/ArticleV.cfm?DisplayID=1922
It's written in the USA, and it's the first I have heard about this subject, so I don't know what is the situation in other parts of the world.
Does anyone else know something about the phasing-out of ZDDP?? _________________ Dick Flower, Nr. Carcassonne. '94 Trofeo 1.4 ie (F), '93 Imola 1.3/1.4 ie (now for breaking) (F), '91 1.7 ie (GB)(spare car), '86 Sprint 1.5 QV (F). '87 VW Syncro camper (F), '73 NSU Ro80 (F), '99 Fiat Seicento (F) |

Interesting.
Incidentally I thought there was a French governmental scheme to phase out older cars by helping with the cost of new ones?

Hi,
Interesting, and a bit worrying.
However, unless i've miss-read it, not a major headache for us as our cars aren't 'flat tappet'. They suggest the problem is with cars like old MGs and A series minis which have underhead cams and pushrod lifters.
I recently bought some oil for servicing my renulat clio (don't laugh -it's a work car) and it was API approved fully synthetic recommended for high mile service intervals. The blurb on the can raved about reduced ash, guess this is the phosphate zddp??
I use mobil 1 fully synth in the Alfa, which the article suggests is ok (at the moment anyway).

Bob
I don't know if a scheme exists in France, but I lived in Spain until recently, and one could get a credit of approximately £200 towards a new car by scrapping one over 10 years old.
There were a few snags - old car had to have a new roadworthiness certificate and road tax paid up, so credit could easily be wiped out by the costs to get car in shape. Also, the dealer had to do some paperwork, which meant one was unlikely to get any other discount off the new car.
John.
OHC engines with flat (as opposed to roller) cam followers have the same extreme pressure conditions between the cam lobe and follower as those with flat tappets and pushrods, so are just as vulnerable to lack of EP additives in engine oil.
Apparently most or all US car manufacturers now use roller cam followers or rockers. I'm pretty sure Honda and other Jap builders do also, but not sure about European manufacturers. _________________ Dick Flower, Nr. Carcassonne. Dick,
Point taken, we should be worried. i also kinda share my fathers '78 Morini bike (with pushrods), and so was a bit worried about that. we manage to get leaded fuel for it, but this is starting to cost nearly as much as beer!
Any pics of your sprint? looks just like my beloved silver '85 1.5 sold (to finance moving out) in 1994 with just 50k and in very good nick - regretted to this day!

Just scrapped my red 33. I paid £155 for it, four(ish) years ago. They paid me £27.50 for the scrap metal content.
That's £127.50 it's cost me.... for four years of hastle free motoring.

Hassle free motoring You sure A case of rose...err pink tinted glasses? Cheers for the plugs. Yep, looks like I am the new AROC 33 registrar for the moment, though I'm sure there are people here that would be more adept than me. Spring Alfa Day April 15th and will put up a post about it. Dave Peters has flown off into the sunset with a new love for the moment. Must put up a list of all the spares I've got for sale sometime. _________________ Owner's Club 33 Registrar.
