Exactly right. Its fitted to front of slam panel behind the grill in front of rad and fan. Looking at my friend Pacet fans they look slim enough to fit between bumper and rad id the bumper edge is relieved a bit. Might have to space grill off possibly also. Oil cooler could then be fitted in the space left where the fan used to be.

Looking to do my first event in the 1400 at Unity farm near Brean Sands at the end of Jan. One problem I have got is accommodation. The event is spread over 3 days and the organisers suggestion is B&B on site at £55 / head, min of 4 people i.e. £220.
Does anyone know of acaravan site open, holiday cottage / flat close to Brean where we could stay for a lot less than that. Just seems a lot to me. Last week I was near Brecon doing my Safety Officers job on SS10 & 13 (Halfway) on the Wales Rally GB and 5 of us had a cottage for a week for £180. Any suggestions appreciated.
Will let everyone know If I get an entry and decide to do event. If I dont I am looking at a doing a rally the weekend after in the Forest of Dean.

Managed to fit some SPAL fans but not as described above.
Oil cooler wont fit in gap between radiator and engine so one is fitted in original fan position but giving more clearance and second is fitted in front of rad on opposite side to other blowing through rad. No problems with clearance. Rear bumper edge slightly relieved.
Got fans from a nice man at a place called Fereday Cars.

It takes a bit of getting used to. I havent been brave enough to try using it without the clutch. Also a lot clonkier if you know what I mean. Testing has been restricted to a twenty mile tootle through a forest I know. Couldnt go balls out as there was every chance a man with a gun would be round the next corner but when I could see through a few bends it went well. All the numbers say it is no more powerful than my 1600. All I can say is numbers can lie. As torque is low there is no neck snapping when you put your foot down. It just seems to start winding up and getting faster and faster. Keep it spinning and it pulls hard in any gear and I mean any.
Hows yours doing Hugh?

Had no luck finding a F/G rear spoiler for S1 or 2 but didnt look that hard to be honest. Rear tailgate is F/G with perspex so the rear spoiler weighs more than the whole of the rear hatch. Sorry but I think the 33 looks a bit like a volvo without it.

Well we did it Very Happy
About 2 yrs after we decided to go down the 1400 route we have finished our first rally with the new engine.
Conditions were horrendous. You had a choice between sheet ice and 4-5inches of snow.
Rally was based in the Forest of Dean. We started as car 261 which isnt quite as bad as it sounds due to the class structure for seeding. Out of the 1400's we were starting at 54th out of 60.
SS1 Snow and sheet ice.Bit of a disaster as we got stuck in a queue of cars trying to get up a hill for about 10 mins.
SS2 Sheet iceCaught and passed 2 cars in 6 miles.
SS3 Snow and sheet ice. Caught and passed one car. Couldnt get passed the second before the finish.
SS4 Tarmac and gravel quick blast around the race course.
SS5 Snow. up to 6" deep. Caught and passed one car.
SS6 cancelled
SS7 Re run of SS2 with some changes. some dirt track was showing in places along with the sheet ice and snow off the sections we hadnt used before. All was going well until a mile from finish and we put it in a ditch for 3 mins. Thanks if you were one of the people who pushed us out.

Eventually finished 105th out of 180, 28th 1400. Without problems we would ahve finished 90th and and about 14th 1400.

Got some decorating to do now before I can play again.

Thanks to everyone on this site who helped me get the car there.

If any one wants to have a look at the car and conditions there are a some photo's on race-pics.com
rally-shots.com
geoffmayesmedia.com.
flickr by Dr magic and smartyc
youtube type in wydean 2009 and then look for video by sugarpie (?) and we are at 4.53 mins in about to overtake a nova.

In retrospect it was a good result for my first event in 4+ years in those conditions.
Once decorating is done and a few mods / repairs then I shall be looking for an event where I can really open it up.

Regards rsfruitbat

Another first for me.
If anyone reads Motorsports News paper there is a small write up and picture in this weeks edition about our run on the Wyedean. Had a mention once before but never got a picture in aswell.
If anyone is bored this Saturday then we have been asked to run Course Closing car on the JRS Motorsport Winter Stages Rally based in the Sweet Lamb rally complex (of the A44 Aberystwyth road) and Hafren Forest.

The event at Sweet lamb was a complete disaster and I have spent since then trying to fix the problems that came to light. These were:
the car wont go up steep hills
front pulley (which has the tooths machined for ECU pickup) kept coming loose.

I had designed the fuel system so that a vacuum in the swirl pot would draw / syphon fuel from the fuel tank. Even with the tank full this wasnt happening reliably. What I have had to do is fit a conventional electric pump filling the swirl pot with a return to tank and then a second pump / original pump running the injection system. This appears to have worked so far.

Front pulley rpoblem was a lot more frustrating. To kepp TDC in the right place the front pulley was dowelled onto the front cambelt cog.
A single dowel sheared off.
3 dowels lasted longer but eventually moved.
3 bigger dowels set deeper into cog lasted about 10 miles.
loctiting everything in place lasted one engine start.
Made front pulley adjustable so nut could be wound up tight without concerns for location 20mins

Getting pretty frustrated now so stripped allo f cambelt / pulley system down off crank. EUREKA

What was happening was the rear cambelt cog was forcing the rear cambelt guide washer over the crank (because its concave). Everytime it was took apart and put back together and tightened up, as soon as it was started it would begin to creep, make some space so all the pressure was on the dowels etc and twist them out.
Had some spacers made to fill in the back of the cog and press up against the crank shoulder and so far it appears to have worked.
Looking to have a go at another rally now.

Had loads of aggro since the last rally solving a fuel pickup problem and then a fully floating front pulley. Only problem being my front pulley controls my engine timing Sad

Tried to get an entry on the Dukeries based in Sherwood forest but couldnt get a run Sad .

My next event is the Quinton Stages rally which is based in Llandovery on Saturday July the 4th, day before NAD. Event uses classic stages like Crychan and several on top of Epynt military range. We are car 253

If anyone can get there give us a wave Very Happy .

Sounds great. Would love to come along and support, but unfortunately will be in Ripon with the other half, hopefully having a romantic weekend so that hopefully she doesn't get too pissed off if she gets roped into register parking the next morning at NAD.
Good luck Razz

Well we finished.
Seemed to go from one extreme to the other.
From the snow of norway ( forest of dean, Feb) to the dust of the sahara (brecon beacons, july).
Ended up being 80th overall and 10th in class.

Pleased with result as I spent the first half of the rally trying to remember what I had forgotten since I last competed and the second half trying to put into practice.

Definately needed far more brave pills than I took with me. The one straightish section was only about 700 m long but it was downhill in 5th gear job so we were doing 90ish. Only concerns being a steep bank to my right and a 100ft drop to my left to the bottom of the valley.

Next rally is planned to be the Woodpecker stages on Sept 5th which is based around Ludlow in Shropshire.

Rsfruitbat

PS the fuel pump packed up on the way home.

After changing the fuel pump and still getting the same problem it was traced to a piece of silicon that was sat in a banjo union. Strange thing was that after removing it it halved in size Shocked .
Next rally entered which is called the "Famous Woodpecker Stages" on September the 5th. Its based at Ludlow racecourse and uses a couple of good forests just outside the town. For those more adventurous the longer stages will be in Radnor Forest on the Welsh border.

I have placed my order for brave pills so hopefully wont be quite as scared doing 100mph+ down a narrow forest track.

Off on holiday this afternoon and coming back to do the rally next Friday.

If anyone manages to get to Ludlow we are running car 243, about 45mins after first car.

Please remember if you do see us and we are stopped - please help push
If we are moving - be prepared to push.

At worst just give us a wave.

Any way car didnt need pushing before or after rally so far

Rally was very mixed for us.
SS1 was quite slippy and we were trying pacenotes for first time which didnt go well.
SS2 started ok and got better soon after the paceneotes went out the window. Got a puncture after about 7miles but thought we had got further to drive than we actually had so lost a load of time changing it.
SS3 &4 were very slippy with some very quick straights which isnt a good combination for me.
SS5 &6 went better with me getting swing of things and conditions not as slippy.
SS7 went great. lots of commitment, noticably faster but the time just wasnt there so very confused at the moment.

Contemplating going back to smaller tarmac rallies for next year just to get the practice in.
