Hi,

Isn't your steering box a ZF one? If so then try to contact your local ZF dealer - it can be fixed.

If you want to remove the box then you ll have to dismantle either of the front suspension. It will then be easier to remove it.

In case you need anything else just drop a line

Regards

Thx for answer gritsop ,
As to ZF not sure but it's cheaper to get a used/new one from a wreck
car as to have it repaired in Germany , Alfa is a luxus car here !
You mention that i would have to dismantle either of the front
suspension , Can you be more specific please I.E passenger side is
better or drivers side , I've got a seconed hand one to install !!
my main thought is can i replace it just by dismantling the suspension
i have a certain amount of knowlage over cars but im not familar with
the Alfa and dont whant to do more work than needed (who does Wink )
I plan to do this next week so i can put the car through the *very tight*
German TUV ,like MOT but harder to get through Confused

Thx again ...

Hi,

By dismantling the passenger's side (it is better and easier since there is more space) you need to undo the 4 nuts which keep in place the chassis and the shock absorber (do NOT undo the central one - the spring will be taken out). By this way the front system can move a little out of the way ; then you can easily take out the rack.

You can check if the rack is ZF by looking at the pump - There is printed the ZF logo.

Have in mind that sometimes when you decide to become a DIY mechanic you are forced to do more work because not always things are easy.
Professional mechanics on the contrary are forced to work less but demand more pay since many cars are waiting outside the garage!!!
So relax and take your time to change the rack; after all you will be satisfied that you did it by yourself and you paid more attention than anyone else.

Regards from Greece

Hi

Think the 33 rack is made by TRW. In the UK reconditioned racks are available.

Changing the rack isn't easy, but the only time I have had to do it was when the engine was out anyway.

All the best

Keith

HI
ive changed mine 3 months ago becoase it was leaking realy bad.I replaced it whith a rebuilded one also ZF and it costed with labour 250EUROS.It must be a pain in the @sh to do it all alone. The only problem was that the PS pump must be worn also becoase a sound is heard, like a motor working,at every turn of the steearing from the str8 position.

Hi,

Bill, it is not necessary that your pump is knackered if sound is heard when you turn the wheel. On the contrary it is normal since when you turn the wheel various valves inside the rack require highly pressure oil and the pump just delivers it pressurised.
The sound is like a wowing if we are talking about the same hearing.
Anyway since the steering system of the car is ZF any component can be easily repaired since ZF has a good service network in Athens. (I can send you the address ; it is very near to Sarakakis in Kavalas Ave.)
