Full story to follow (it involves the RAC) but does anyone know where I can source the clip that retains the pin that links the gear level to the linkage.

It's a square of double thickness thin sheet metal about 15mm square with a hole about 8mm diameter in the middle except one half of one side has broken away.

I've not yet been under to have a look (posh work clothes on!) so forgive the sketchy details. Does thing thing locate in a groove, can I use a stanard circlip?

Clip still available from AR, but you might have to buy 10 of them in a pack.

Thanks, am I taking the p. by asking if you know the part number or at least what Alfa call them? Have banged off an email to Meridien Milano in Pompey and they are normally very helpful.

I'll happily buy a bag of 10, will probably keep them in the car from now on.

Apparently they are called 'safety clips' or 'safety fasteners' and are basically a more secure version of the circlip e.g.

http://www.springfix.co.uk/products/clevis-pins-and-clips-yellow-zinc-safety-fasteners.htm

Meridien Milano were very helpful ,replying within an hour with a scan of the parts book and asking which bits. They then replied to my reply very promptly but sadly that part is NLA. However it seems that I shall be able to source it elsewhere and may well be able to use a standard circilp in the meantime.

I'm glad I lost everything but third approaching the busy and rather tight central car park in Petersfield rather than half way through a complex parking manoeuvre. RAC were with me within 50 minutes, problem diagnosed in another 5 and then he disappeared and sourced a similar part from a friendly local garage in another 15. Unfortunately the new clip was a rather loose fit and as home was only ten minutes away the RAC man followed me home and I came back to work in my Sprite.

I'll measure the hole later and once I found a source of the clips will post here.

Aha, I see others have been here before!

Why didn't they just put a nyloc on there and have done with it.

Yesterday evening I spent some quality time under the 33 familiarising myself with the linkage and fitting a circlip that doesn't actually fit that well.

If I want to replace the bush as well I'll obviously need to get the pin right out of the socket, am I correct in presuming that to do this I'll have to remove the large gearbox to chassis brace and then remove the gearlever?

That happened to me when I had a 33.
Clip cost next to nothing, recovery £75 to BLS in Lincoln, bit of money for labour, but the real clincher was having to hire a car as I had loaded the 33 up to move from Lincolnshire down to Wilshire, £100 for 4 days.

Still loved the motor though

There is one washer (rubber), one washer (metal) and TWO clips.

One of the clips like the link from Jeremy and an 'E' clip. You must have both to stop it falling off (at least falling off for a while).

So part 7 'ring' is actually an e-clip, yes?

Does the clip straddle the e-clip or is it fully below it?

Alfa 1 - Jeremy 0

OK, so after wrestling for about an hour I gave up on getting both clips on.

The e-clip went on easily but more or less fills ths slot so where do you put the folded clip.

I did sort of get it on once, with one of the prongs of the fork under the e-clip and one over. To my mind this was putting a loading on the e-clip that was making it more likely to come off.

The hold in the folded clip is of such a diameter that it has to drop in the slot to be secure and I just can't see that there is room for both in the slot.

So presently I'm driving round with just the e-clip, I've presently done about 30 miles of round town stuff so plenty of gear changes.

That said the gear change feels a bit more precise, I did put a slightly thicker washer on to pull the pin a little harder down into the bush.

I think I'll be getting a spare linkage and drilling it for a split pin!

I've been speaking to a Midget and Sprite acquaintance who works for a company selling linkages, clevis pins and clips and he has never come across the situation where two clips are used.

I'd also forgotten about the big scanned pdf manual. Page 1374 of this would seem to indicate that there are only three items: the rubber washer, the ordinary washer and a single clip. The picture looks like it's the square folded type of clip.

I had this problem with my series 3, i'm driving around with just the "e" clip on but i've wrapped some thin wire around the clip and then around the selector arm, so if it does fall off it'll just be hagging from the bottom of my car rather than lost somewhere down the road and so will no longer have the need to call the RAC.

sorry this may be pointless information but i'm new here and thats the first and may well be the last time i have something kind of worth saying.Laughing Laughing Laughing

Charlie.

Welcome to the forum Charlie.

That's very sensible and is something I'd considered myself. As it is the ashtray in my car has some spare clips in it!

the same problem happened to me after owning my now dead alfa 33 for about 5 minutes! a quick fix is a big zip tie around the end of the rod (and then very light gear changes all the way home!)

i permanently modified it by drilling a hole in the end of the rod and using a split pin... was fine even when giving it plenty of stick then!
