Just finished doing the templates for the 3mm mdf
you can see my rookie mistake lol

I am now going to mark out the metal of the door to see where i can cut for the speaker.

Smile
Lol
Always happy to meet a fellow beefcake Smile

I marked with green marker pen where the regulator is and where i wanted to fit the speaker

I drilled my centre hole for the speaker cut out using my template from the front of the door card. I then drew around the template on the back side of the door card and using the dremel with a drill bit I drilled out a circle.

I then cut through all the holes with a Stanley / craft blade and popped off the card, leaving the front still on.

I then roughly cut out the vinyl.

Then I smoothed out the stamp like outer edge with the dremel and then carefully cut the vinyl with the knife, here’s the finished result.

If i need 9mm spacers it will look like this

if i need 18mm spacers it will look like this

Here is an 18mm spacer with a 9mm inner spacer

This is so my current 5 1/4" speakers will be flush mount

I also have a 9mm outer ring if needs be but it wont be flush mounted then
I think I should have left a bit more vinyl, i will do on the other door. I was going to just stick the rings over the vinyl but i think this will look better

I have made a boo boo Sad

I guess I need real x-ray vision as I have missed

Good news is that there is a 10mm gap between the door and the door card, so a 9mm spacer ring will be fine, + 2.5mm for the door card + 18mm for outer ring spacers leaves me 30.5mm until i hit the metal or 21.5mm if i only use a 9mm spacer on the outside.
I will measure how much space ther is from the glass to the door, to get my total mounting depth.

I had an idea, if you look closely at pic 1 and 2 in my previous post, you can see my marker pen on the black foam, where the back of the door card touches the black foam. If I move the other strips of black foam rubber to where the raised part of the door card is and press the door card hard, it will leave and imprint. That way I can make sure the ring is in the right place.
Hope people are watching and learn by my mistakes.
If anyone wants the templates or my 1st attempt at the boot floor, they are more than welcome, I will also supply measurements once I get the hole in the right place, for people to replicate.

Actually I rarely have music on and even when I do fairly it's quiet, I just find it a distraction these days, post 40 brain atrophication (sp?) I find I need 100% of my concentration on my driving.

The standard system is a bit trebly but it's not too bad.

you need big ol subs in the boot, because the car is so frighteningly quick, it needs extra weight to keep it on the ground.

Couple of 18" badboys should be the daddy. Crank up the power, rumble it in the bronx and man you got some serious chunky muscle PUMPING!!! yeaaahh man

He he,
Me to, quality not volume for me.
I have always been an audiophile, home hi-fi and appreciate listening to good music. I am mot a hard core techno / drum and base nut, I like soul r&b "urban" good vocals and the occasional classical piece.
I have never had a decent music system in any of my cars and I tried back in 2004, I am finally getting to finish it. I wanted to do it myself but I never got around to it

I have always found the standard system pants but that because I’m used to home hi-fi

I just did a dry run, connected everything up and rested the door cards against the doors as they will not fit yet as I need to cut out the metal to allow for the speakers, there is 50mm clearance btw.
I also need to move the regulators a bit, so I have made a template for the 4 nuts.

Even in this state and my install being an entry level one, the difference was very noticeable.
Still got lots to do but here’s a pic of the other door finished, with no mistakes I might add Smile

Al... I think you might have to inform your insurance company of the modification as these may obscure your vision? Laughing

I borrowed a cordless drill and made some stamps again.

Then i cut it out with wire cutters

I then removed the oem doorbell wire and replaced the wire to the woofer with the same that is used from the amp to the crossover.

I fitted the door cards properly and just managed to squeeze the woofers in as the regulator is in the way. I wasn't able to move it as the drill battery ran out.

For the first time i can actually hear separation, the sound sounded light and airy, the soundstage isn't quite there, think I need to raise the tweeters.
The treble is not harsh like the original setup. The radio was very warm and sounded better than the cd.
Still got lots to do.

I am thinking of mounting the tweeters in the A pillars directly above the woofer, which will be ear height.
