Hi. I was thinking of improving the running and power of my 16 valve by fitting a squadra chip. Will these run on basic unleaded or do you have to buy Super unleaded once one has been fitted? Also, where is the best & cheapest place to get hold of one? Also, I have a sports air filter element fitted into the standard 16 valve filter box. Whats the best way to route extra ducting to get more cold air into the engine? It seems pretty tight between the filter box intake and below the headlamp??

Cheers Paul.

The engine will run, but it will ping under load, so best to use fuel with a rating of RON98.

Yeah, always run the higher octane even on an unmodified 16V. From what I've noticed you pay more at the pump but if you drive the same you get more milage per tank. Of course this doesn't work if you drive to the extra power you get from the higher octane. Treat the 33 to higher octane, it deserves it.

Hi

Higher octane fuel alone will not give you any more power at all. Not a sausage. You can alter the ignition timing to take advanatge of higher octane fuel (or up the compression ration, or .....), but then the car will suffer from pinking on lower octane fuel.

UK normal petrol is 95 RON, with 97 RON super unleaded available. However Super Unleaded is very expensive. Average UK price for high octane fuel in July (according to the AA) was 80p per litre. Think there are 2.7 Aus$ to the £ so that is Aus$2.16 a litre, and I would struggle to find it that cheap for super unleaded (97 RON lead replacement petrol is cheaper, even though it is just high octane unleaded with an additive and is taxed at the same rate).

All the best

Keith

Yeah but me folks just got back from 6 months in Oz and me old man recons that petrol is 80cents a litre so I recon down under tune up and stick the good stuff in. I know the difference between unleaded and leaded was huge performance wise.

Yeah ppetrol here is less than half what you guys pay for it. The higher octane is only a few dollars more per tank compared to the standard unleaded.

Point taken although on newer cars which can modify ignition timing on the fly and have knock sensors etc just pumping in the higher octane will increase power, although the 33 16V is fuel only so it's not capable of this.
Doesn't that relay near the battery affect which octane the engine needs depending on what colour is used? I know mine has no relay there and from what I can tell this means 97 RON. Anyone know how this relay affects the engine?

Hi

Yes that relay does determine the octane setting, either 91 or 95 RON with a cat, or 95 RON or 97 RON without a cat.

The 16V ecu does control ignition timing but has no feedback from a knock sensor. Not many cars do except turbo equiped models.

All the best

You mean it has a sensor to tell you when it is falling to bits. Must be on all the time Confused

All the best

It probably warns Gareth when he is driving too slow that he is being rammed from behind.
