Some great racing there, watched all 3 videos with interest. The first one was particularly errr.... eventful! Surprised

John, how on earth can you tell there is power steering involved. Am I missing something?

Great videos, watched one on iPhone, then watched them again on a large screen.
It was like being in the car with you, great camera position there.
Did you have an issue with a bonnet pin in one of the races?
think I saw it flapping up a bit?

Yes, GoPro camera. Happy with the placement Smile Not so happy that the battery did'nt work this weekend Sad

Yes, bonnet pin is now secured with duct tape Wink

Was season finale this weekend with the last 2 races in the series, but after 7 laps in race 1, my engine said Goodbye with a lot of new noises and power loss - so had to stop.

Don't know what's wrong this time, cause the sound is more consistent then when the engine bearings went last time, and the big power drop confuse me, so could be more then one reason for breaking down now.

Sound is low, but "hard" when idling and not in gear, but "mechanical mayhem" when shifting into gear and rolling forward (with warm engine). Tried it again when I got home, and the sound was MUCH lower....but still there...

So winter project is secured!!

Hey Brovold, nice to see you here..

If you haven't looked at it already, then definitely check out http://www.alfaboxertuning.fws1.com/.

Lots of good info there that will be helpful in the rebuild.

I'm reliably informed that grinding the excess casting on the con-rods, balancing them, and then polishing them, will help create a more reliable bottom end.

Keep us posted Smile

Are you really sure about that?

I can understand removing the excess casting blocks at the bottom and on the small end, but the conrods are treated in a certain way before leaving the factory and removing the flashing and casting marks along the general rod can in fact de detrimental. Also, processes to shot peen and surface harden can also be quite hit and miss.

I think there are some real risks in doing what appears obvious to con rods, but really, really good advice seems to be somewhat all over the place.

I am having an engine built at the moment and the engine builder suggested that for the expense of having them cut down, checked, balanced, surface treated etc it is almost worth going straight for a set of Carello rods and be certain when compared to the increased risk, minimal gains and any uncertainty that goes with modifying factory rods. Trust me I really wanted to start cutting and smoothing my rods - but have decided to leave them alone.

Just my thoughts..... Smile

err.. not entirely haha

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing and all that Embarassed Perhaps i should have been more precise in what i was recounting

The advice (from several sources) was to remove any obvious excess casting, and possibly the blocks on the bottom end(depending on how much material needs to come off to achieve a balance), and then polish.

Shot peening, and surface hardening, were not recommended - i concur that both processes can make the rods more brittle.. but yes, one chap did also say that a light dressing of the rods was the 'safest' option.

Brovold is obviously doing it himself, and was just trying to make suggestions that would be possible by his own means.

To a degree, I'm also courting opinion for when i start getting into my own build Rolling Eyes

What are the proposed specs for your motor then Ed?

Jonboy's bottom end is still for sale.

He very kindly offered it to me and in fact it was my old engine from a few years ago. If you ask him he may still be selling it. It needed rebuilding but you would be best to talk to him directly.

I decided to start over with a complete new build.

The basic spec for mine is:

start with a 145 engine, use the block, crank and rods only.

Rebored to 89mm. New pistons from JE, standard rods, see our postings, balanced bottom end, lightwight flywheel.

Fit it all together and see if it will take high lift cams.

Aftermarket ECU onto standard throttle bodies. Larger sump. All new exhaust manifold and system to probably my own design, unless someone wants to help.

Some parts are difficult to come by - like complete engine gasket sets!

As many new parts around the engine as possible, depending on how the budget allows. Ideally would like 190hp but more realistically going to get just about 170hp on a good day. The last time I did it the engine turned out at 169hp, but this time there are a few little increases I am trying to dial in. Smile

Hi Edward, your rebuild with 89mm pistons is 16v or 8v?

Hello Bobkelso,

it is for a 16v engine.

Hi Ed, if your building a 16v engine then why an 8v flywheel?, the reason I ask is you can use an aftermarket ECU using the 16v flywheel pick up sensor rather than adding a trigger of the main crank and would be cheaper?.

Iain,

Yep, a good point, but the 8 valve flywheel is significantly lighter than the 16v flywheel and all you need to do is add the toothed wheel by the belt pulleys. These are not expensive at around £25 and give you the pick up for the aftermarket ecu.

When I was looking for an 8 valve flywheel I got one very kindly of GT Coup, who sent me one in the post and at the same time obtained a lightened 8v flywheel from one of the other members. So, although I understand the pitfalls of lightening flywheels too far - I do now have a choice of which to fit. Oddly, I put an 8v flywheel on the last engine build, with the starter motor spacer and it all just worked out fine.

That reminds me - has anyone got one of those 8v spacers handy. It fits between the starter motor and the block, on the 8v cars. I need it to position the starter motor correctly.... please. Smile
