If anyone has a problem with their light sprinklers not working, check that a resistor in the tall black relay hasnt blown like mine, i am going to buy a resistor after i borrowed one of these relays from Paul (thanks) I cant tell the colours so i will pop to maplins and get them to choose. |

Hi
I take it you already have the wiring diagrams.
All the best

I probably have some info about what the relays are for |
did you find this info?
Gritsop is in the process of installing light sprinklers and has asked me what all the relays do due to his car not having any at all, he has determined there is a difference in the loom if one has fog lights / light sprinklers or not. He has already fitted the fog lights but is curious as to what the other relays do as he might have to change this part of the loom.
He would also like to know the part numbers for the sprinklers, the washer bottle with the extra motor for the sprinklers and weather its possible to cross reference the Alfa part number with the bosh part number for the tall black relay. Thanks |

Could be that with all the testing etc, the battery has got a bit clapped out? |
Mine was like this too until I got a new set of ignition leads. The battery light go's out pretty much straight away now. |

Update, the tall black relay doesn’t make the fog lights work, as they work when it is removed. Not done anything else with exhaust I have a spare pack for the alternator, I will give that a try, just coincidence that it starts playing up now |

Glad the rest is sorted. How's the exhaust coming on?

YAHOOOOOO!!!!!!!
All is now working, I was worried about connecting anything to the black connector after fuse box fiasco and hot smoking wires, but after speaking to gritsop (thanks), who assured me that the relay with the fuse goes there and is for the fog lights, I connected that relay. The only thing is that the other relays are rated 10a 20a 30a, I’m not sure where each 1 should go though.
The pic from my old red 33 is correct, front green block connector, which has a red wire going to the fuse holder, holds the tall black relay (front sprinklers). Black block connector holds the fused relay (fog lights).
The tall black relay has a timer circuit in it and when the light are on, supplies power to fog light and sprinkler circuit (using timer). The blue block connector is also for the sprinkler as the sprinklers didn’t seem to work when this wasn’t in. I’m not sure what the brown block connector does, or the other green block connector.
I also removed all the connectors on my dash and bent all metal connectors closser together, trip and tacho now work again. Only thing left is that the bat charging light doesnt go out until engine gets to 2.5k rpm |

Well all was going well (apart from no fog lights) and then..... Temp gauge started to drop, then rise, then drop, so u took the cowling off, as it’s still loose ready for my LED bulbs, and I wiggled the wires at the back. Tacho and trip don’t work again and temp is reading about half the temp...DOH! BLEEPING Alfa electrics!!!! ARGGHHHH!! ![Evil or Very Mad](images/smiles/icon_evil.gif) |

Hi Al,
In the process of elimination, have you run juice directly from the battery to the fog light plugs with some old cable?

Well, I was playing around with an LED bulb for the dash and decided to strip all my dials and cleaned everything, inc the bulbs.
I removed the motor and cog and moved the numbers, was a bit stiff at first, but then freed off. I couldn't see any burnt marks on the pcb or fried resistors. I cleaned all the contacts with Powerflow Flux and loosened off and re tightened the earthing screws
Everything now works again in the dials. So what was all the smoke about?
I still have no front fog lights.
I still want to know what those annoying relays do!! ![Evil or Very Mad](images/smiles/icon_evil.gif) |

Been there, done that john I even made a connector with a long wire and a buld on the end in an indicator holder resting on the front panel to see if it comes on ![Laughing](images/smiles/icon_lol.gif) |

Hi,
Glad you got it sorted.
The foglights may be just the plugs behind the bumper where the leads from the foglight joins the loom. Notoriously bad connections- have a wiggle while a friend looks on.

I fixed my electrics YEAH!!! I swapped the fuse box which had shorted.
I still want to know what those relays by the battery do, as my fog lights still dont work. |

Big thanks to Paul for giving up 3.5 hours isolating the problems. By removing the bottom left connector on the steering column and a certain relay, I now have main beam lights.
We figured out that the relays by the battery have nothing to do with lights, horn, hazards, indicators, wipers, fan or engine management, as we took them all out of his 33 and everything worked. Except light sprinklers (which paul hasnt got) and fog lights (which didnt work anyway on pauls car), that’s all I can think they do.
Can someone tell me what those relays do? Before I explain to an electrician?
Can anyone recommend an electrician to fix this? Do they have to be an Alfa 33 specialist? I’m in the Brighton / Redhill / Leatherhead area.
Don’t know if it’s worth posting a list of errors but if you want them, let me know.
Thanks |

Help!!! All was going well, I put the relays back to how they were but when the tall black relay was on the second in black connector, the wires got realy hot and smoke/melting happened.
I found out that the tall black relay is a timer for the light sprinklers and goes on the front green connector and the green connector next to it has something to do with the lights, due to me taking the relay cover off and when turning the lights on the relay activated, but the lights still worked with this relay out.
I couldn’t find out what did the fog lights, so I started swapping all but the tall relay around.
Now I don’t have any indicators, main beam or high beam, wipers front and rear. Horn is ok, along with side and break lights and engine starts. Bulbs aren’t blown, or any fuses, fan doesn’t come on until you move something on the stalks and there is a buzzing sound coming from the big black relay in the fuse box sometimes.
I have tried removing all relays and disconnecting the battery, still the same thing.
Help!! |

thanks bobber, there were no relays lying around

I checked all the wiring was the same and that the same wires went to the same coloured connector for the relays.

i finally set up a photo bucket account. |

Hello.... I'm still here!
I thought the relays were constructed in a strip so they could be in ANY order - as long as the correct wires went to the right ones?!?!? Alan... are you sure that on the car with one 'less' relay that it hadn't just fallen off the strip?!
I probably have some info about what the relays are for - and I'll post your photos up lunchtime.

thanks very much lee, Iv not heard from bobber re my pics, hope hes alright. Nice pics btw. i wont explain the difference as a pic will say a thousand words.
I cleaned the connectors when testing fog lights washers ect as i was puzzled as to why they worked on my red car and not silver.
Any one got any more pics?
Maybe an easier question to ask would be...
What relays go where if all were taken out??? |

Btw....tried the fan/ lights scenario and that doesn't work on mine. I would think something is wired up wrong somewhere!
Are you sure that your fog lights/ squirters ( ) aren't just a case of bad connections. My foggies stopped working because of bad terminals. |
