Update since last journey, I got a friend to tow my car from Horley to Horsham last week and planned to work on it there, but as all my tools are in Brighton and because of the journey each time I thought I’d tow it back to Brighton. Another friend “green cloverleaf pat” who now owns a 145 2.0L TS kindly offered to tow me back. Last night, on our way down the A23 just after Handcross, whilst being towed, Pat flashed his brake lights, signalling for me to brake, which I did. We were on a downward slope and I was thinking we are going a little quick. Next I saw pats brake lights come on as well and then it looked as if he was pulling over, I was thinking why? were going to fast to pull over, I then herd tyre squeal as he started going sideways and thought SH*T he’s going to crash and pull me into the trees and I’m going to go into the back of him and mess up his car and its going to be my fault as I asked him to tow me, arghh!!! This didn’t happen as the towing bar had snapped off his car and I pulled my car onto the side of the road and ran up to where he was already out of the car talking to his brother, obviously a little shaken up but ok. What I saw next was not what I expected, regarding the damage to his car. I expected to see a deployed airbag; broken window, square rims, and a caved in front end. There was none of this, much to my relief. The car had come to rest in-between two small tree like bushes and the front bumper was resting on one. We tried to get the car out by putting branches under the front wheels but to no avail, thinking he was stuck you would not believe what happened next. An AA flatbed truck turned up, two guys came out, saying that they saw my car further down the road and thought they would stop and then they saw pats car and thought we might be pinching stuff off it, so they stopped to be nosey. Then another AA flatbed turned up, had a chat and he went on his way. The AA guys winched pats car out and apart from a few light scratches and a bent up towing eye receptacle, there appeared to be no damage. The AA guys said that someone up there was looking down on you tonight and I was very happy for him. The police then turned up, had a quick chat, obviously pleased that they didn’t have to get involved and went on their way. The AA guys suggested that I let my car coast downhill to the next turn off, with them behind with their lights on and pat behind me. They then put my car on the flat bed and said if they get a job they would have to unload my car at the nearest petrol station or lay-bye. Pat followed in his car, what he was thinking to himself I don’t know. We managed to get my car home, I asked the AA guys to follow Pat and I to the nearest petrol station and id give them some money for their assistance and kindness, very nice men, very, very nice men. After they had left we looked over his car and could not see any further damage, Pat said that he doesn’t think he will be doing anymore towing in the near future and explained what happened from his point of view, along with a few expletives, which I shall omit. Where pat indicated for me to brake, he was already coasting and picking up speed, thinking we were going to fast he braked as well and the weight of my car pushed his rear right side out to the right as the towing bar was on my front left and his rear right side. At this point he was going sideways down the road, half on the verge and half on the road. I had gone past him at this point, he said he can’t remember if he tried to turn into the slide or not, as it all happened so quickly. He then slid onto an asphalt turn off, where the car straightened up and headed for the trees/bushes, where he braced himself for a huge impact, he said he thinks we were doing 60 or 70 nutter!!! Pat gave me a lift home and we looked at my car, I was not so lucky, but happy for him. My bumper now sits 4inches to the right, as you face the front, there is damage to both wings and the towing eye is a funny shape, pulled out and stretched and half impaled in the bumper. All in all, not a good experience but could have been so much worse. Here’s where it all happened, put the following into co-ordinates into Google maps 51.046052, -0.200088 Pictures to come, towing bar is simuler to this
Hey BigAl, just seen you're other posts - That car is keeping you busy. Haven't been on the forum much as work has been uber busy but will hopefully be around a bit more from now.
I'll do the pulley bearings as well then when I'm doing the cambelts.
All the best

Thanks suds, mush appreciated, make sure you do your pulley bearings as well.
Ha, you big woos, it wasn’t that bad as iv done loads of 8v heads before, this was my first 16v.
Only took so long as I don’t have a garage.
I have no time to drink that giant bottle of JD as there is so much else to do to it, have you seen my other posts? Blooming door, light connection on loom ect ect.
Owning one of these little beasts sure does keep you busy.

Jees BigAl, WELL DONE, it’s great to hear she’s back running again.
I took the wuss approach to sorting out by broken cambelt and bought a 33 engine off Paul on Saturday (thanks Paul
). I’m still gonna change the cambelt and probably water pump on it though so I’ve got that fun to come, but at least I don’t have bent valves etc to contend with.
If I were you I’d be settling down with one giant bottle of JD right now!!

The saga finally somes to an end. No more stories from me.
Ok, one.
Finished car off today, left the cat not attached to the manifold, as I didn’t want any crud blocking it up, removed the white coil lead, so it wouldn’t fire. Turned her over a few times and re checked oil levels.
connected the white wire again and started her up, she ran for 5 secs then stalled, tried again, Bang, a miss fire, knew what I had done and reversed no 2 and 4 ht lead. Ran again but very noisey.
I was warned that the hydraulic tappets would be noisy for a bit, but it sounded too loud for that and I thought id bent a valve along the way. I was really sad and thought, I have to do all this again, nooooo.
Let her run for a while and then connected the cat to the manifold and then the wire telling the ecu there is a cat.
Checked oil again and ran until the fan came on, car was hunting, very rough and very noisy. Eventually she began to sing, all be it very quietly
Yeah!!!
Let her cool down, check coolant and then took her for a drive. Have done a few miles and will run her in for the next month as I hardly use my car.
The End

Update,
Used a thread cleaner and used the long bolt, all is now ok
Had fun putting in the lower passenger side, rear metal cam cover bolt. Thread cleaner to the rescue again
All that’s left is,
coolant
radiator and fan
oil and filter
Manifold, 1 stud needs to be screwed back into the head, could not get the nut off, so will replace.
Throttle cable
No box of bits left, just 1 bolt down, the cam cover one that snapped, plus the other 2 i left off from last time i removed the covers.

keith, it was clyinder no2 at the front.
Update,
I forgot to mention that I put the belts on Tuesday,
Minus 1 tension spring as I left it at my friends garage,
I didn’t torque anything up.
Also did the throttle bodies
Injectors and rail
Some coolant hoses
And removed the radiator for easier access.
I torqued up the head today
Torqued up the cam shells
Torqued up the cam pulleys, I used the M12 spline to hold the pulleys in place, thanks Lee.
Put the cam cover back on
I had to take off the belt as I couldn’t get the spring for the tensioner on, due to not having he correct tools.
What a P.I.T.A getting the belt back on, I also hate aluminium Bobbber!! One of the bolts that holds on the oil return, our flexi friend, didn’t feel like it was biting up. So I swapped it with the other one, which is slightly longer, thinking it would just poke through the other side.
Oh no! It stripped the thread, so i will get a longer bolt tomorrow and put a nut on the end.
All that’s left is,
oil and filter
Manifold, 1 stud needs to be screwed back into the head
Engine stabiliser
Power steering belt
Alternator belt
Throttle linkage and cable
2 HT leads
Electrics
Plenum chamber
I have to get a passenger side cam cover and 3 bolts
Think I could have had it done today if not for the little problems, just ran out of light.

I looked at my old valves and there was no sign of 3 angles??? all the valves were ground in and only had 1 angle?
I hope i have the correct cylinder number, it is the front passenger side, as the engine turns clockwise the valves open and i assume the piston is on the way inwards. Its just that the piston is flush with the block and the valves are opening and look as it there going to touch the top of the piston.

Hi
Presume they mean the 3 angle seats.
Not sure about the valve being open. Possible as that is the end of the exhaust stroke, hence possible for some overlap.
All the best

Anyone???
Also in the manual it talks about 3 angles on the valve, and here

Borrowing a 3/8 torque wrench.
When the engine is in TDC no4 cylinder it is flush with the block but the inlet valves are open slightly. Is this correct

Thanks, I was thinking of putting it all back together, minus the engine stabiliser, so I can still tighten up the head bolts.
With the belts on I guess it will be ok to tighten the cam pulleys with the car in gear.

It was the 1/2" M12 spline if I remember correctly.

Thanks Lee, I will give that a go, do you remember what size you used?
I now see why people say there isn’t enough room, it might just be my torque wrench though.
I put the head on and only nipped up all the bolts, when it came to torque them up I couldn’t get the torque wrench in the space, even when engine was moved/tilted over
I am using a ½” bit torque wrench with ½” m12 spline. It measures 85mm, just over 3 ¼” tall.
Will a 3/8” torque wrench be different, if there is such a thing?

Al,
Probably not the
recommended
way of doing it but I wedged a bit of hex steel in between the pulleys to stop them rotating whilst I torqued it up. Did the job and there was no damage to the teeth.

Well I give up, I can’t tighten the pulleys onto the camshafts as the slot on the camshaft isn’t enough to hold the camshaft in place whilst trying to tighten up with a torque wrench.
Also the cam bearing caps have a setting of 25Nm, the torque wrench starts at 50Nm. I was told to tighten with a ratchet until it pinches and then turn 1/4 turn, I only tightened to 45 degrees and thought that was tight enough, let alone 90 degrees.

How do you tighten the cam pulleys on to the camshaft? Are you supposed to use the tool Keith Mentioned?
Or the part on the cam shaft that is slotted? I don’t have the tool and was thinking of using the slotted part on the camshaft but the slot doesn’t seem that good, especially to keep the shaft still whilst tightening with a torque wrench.

update.
I was told by my local alfa garage mechanic that there are two types of pulley bearing supports, when I went to order new supports from “no name” garage, I told the guy that there are two types, but he said there only sided. He couldn’t get any so I got them from “no name 2” garage second hand.
I pressed off the old pulleys bearings off the new second hand supports and pressed on my new pulley bearings. I went to fit them and the supports didn’t fit!
Upon further inspection there are indeed two types, my type are as follows.
Fixed bolt hole is 23.05 – 23.10mm high and 8.38mm wide.
Other types are 17.10 – 17.12mm high and 8.0mm wide
I phoned up “no name 2” garage and explained the situation, as in they don’t fit due to the differences between the supports, saying that to press off the bearings I can’t see a way of not damaging them, as the pin head is 16.72mm and the centre of the bearing is 17.70mm. He said press them off and see if they get damaged.
I pressed off my new bearings and yes they got damaged, the bearing cover, which is covered in rubber, had indents from the bearing cage from being pushed up against it.
I called up “no name 2” garage and told him they had been damaged and he asked for the supports and new damaged bearings to be sent back to him.
Thinking about it he should have just taken back the supports with new bearings on them and given me money for the bearings DOH! I am hoping that he will pay for my damaged bearings as he told me to press them off.
I have asked my local alfa garage mechanic if he has any supports spare that are correct for me, I will find out tomorrow.
Just thought id post my experiences so if anyone else doing this can learn from what I have experienced. I was told there was two types and then told, no there only sided!!
Pressing the bearings out is easy but will get damaged. You will need a long wheel bolt to fit in the 12mm hole in the support, a deep 17mm socket and a vice.
To press them on you need to press the pin into the bearing first, using the wheel bolt, or something as wide as the pin head, 16.7mm and a deep socket to accommodate the 12mm shaft of the pin and 17.7mm wide to push up against the centre of the bearing, so the bearing doesn’t get damaged. Then press it into the support.
I’m getting really disheartened about all this and need some encouragement guys.

I have an oil leek on the good head side, but I have just kept an eye on oil levels and I think it is coming from one of the cam oil seals.
I was thinking of changing the cam oil seals on the good side, without removing the head and with the engine in situ, whilst I have the now repaired head off.
With the cams in the tension position, as in the two triangles together, will the cams move if the cam pulleys are removed?
I ask this as I incorrectly removed the belts whilst the engine was in TDC, instead of the two triangles together and the cam has moved so that the valves are resting on a piston, I am not moving the engine until the belt is back on.
On the head that’s now repaired, there is a slight movement when in the two triangle position but I don’t know about the driver’s side.
After reading Bobbbers post about the camshaft cover bolts, I’m worried about touching it, should I leave it?

Hi
Yes, do it in stages, each time in the right order.
Some designs of engine do require the head bolts to be retightened after the engine has run for a bit.
All the best

Going to try fitting head on Saturday, in the manual it says take a few attempts at tightening. Does this mean tighten all up in the correct order to a lower setting than desired and then increase on each attempt until desired setting is reached. Surely it doesn’t mean tighten and then un tighten and re tighten until desired setting, as this would crush the metal gasket and then releasing it again???
