Good news everyone, it came in today, so i can finally do a coolant flush, then fill up with paraflu eg. Instead of a 50/50 mix, will it be ok to go to 70 distilled water/Deionized water and 30 coolant or 60 / 40 in England, as water conducts heat better? I'm only doing a flush because when the head was off the remaining coolant left in the radiator corroded a little as it went brown from sitting there for a few weeks. I reused the coolant because it was less than 1 year old and still clear, before i mixed it with the rad remains, doh! I will change my header tank back to a nice cleaned 16v screw top one, for originality (bobbber) and finally fit my lambda sensor, now the car will come off choke. I will have spare hose clips and Iain do you have any spare silicone hose left if i need to buy some, wink, wink, post those loverly pics up here as well please.
I bought one , cleaned it up to fit it but the top rad inlet would foul on the offside Air filter, sold it on for a minor profit though.

Totally agree. My thermostat now costs £5 and should take 5 mins to replace

They are handy those. I have a slightly knackered spare one in the garage that can probably be restored. Never quite understood why Alfa changed to the throw away ones. Always seemed a bit odd to me.

Hi J.C
You are correct, that sender is the one for the dash. The other is on the left front throttle body when viewed (from the drivers perspective) and that one is the CTS

A run down to Portsmouth and back for dinner with my folks confirmed the car is sitting nicely at 80.
However near home I had a fright when the needle when all the way to the left. However it soon returned to 80 and a check of the reservoir confirmed the car hadn't lost water.
There is a sensor in the RH throttle body (from the drivers perspective) with it's connector facing into the centre of the engine. Whilst changing the 'stat I noticed the connection would pull off very easily (silly, I should have changed the connector while I was in there). Is this the sender for the gauge or is this the CTS as discussed elsewhere. Or are they one and the same?

It's funny you should say that, 'cos mine definitely sounded more beaty, more like a scooby. Was paranoid i'd got the cam timing slightly out at first, as belts done at same time.
My car now goes quickly to 80deg whereas before it never got anywhere near unless stuck in traffic on a very hot day.
JC if you find that short bit of wide hose is a problem i've got a bit left after buying a metre length.

Nice one J.C
I noticed an exhaust note change after i did mine. I think the dials are conservative because the engine is supposed to sit at 90c, so i have been told, every 33 i have driven indicates 80c on the dial but when i had scantools on mine the CTS was saying 90c but the dial said just over 80c

And done...
Old stat definitely faulty as I could blow through it (covering up the little (heater?) port) which I couldn't on the new one.
Hoses fine, the short one to the RH head was cut a bit raggedy in the factory (thanks Alfa) and is a little short but just long enough if postioned in the middle.
Just done a 15 miles test drive and the car is now coming up to an indicated 80 whereas before it was 70. Car feels a bit crisper and though still a bit rough between 2.5k and 3k feels not quite so bad.
Apparently (fingers crossed) no coolant leaks.
If it was overfueling constantly I'd expect everything to be a bit sooted up so am hoping to see further improvements over the next few weeks.
Thanks for all your help and support.
Btw, if you have a Camberley Auto Factors near you they seem to have the best price on QH420K (£25 ish) though it's a special order so you have to pay in advance.
Total time for the job about 2 hours though I reckon next time I could probably do it in not much more than 1 hour.

Thanks chaps.
Viewed from afar the hoses look good so hopefully they are OK.
No work on the 33 today as I'm off to collect my '63 Sprite which has been having some rust attended to.

Hi,
Those standard clips aren't too bad to get off, but they will need to go in the bin and be replaced with jubilees.
You need to prise the side 'flaps' open with a very small screwdriver, then prise the inner bit and they fall apart. Once you've done one you'll see what I mean I hope.
Jeremy- make sure all your hoses are good.

good luck, i cut them off as i think they are put on with a special tool, saving time when fitted at the factory. I had loads of fun getting them off, I would have used a pair of cutters that are shaped like a "c", instead i used pliers, gripping straight on and then twisting, i was worried about damaging the hose. I to wonder if they can be reused.

All lined up to replace my 'stat this weekend, QH420K sitting in its box in the footwell.
I had a quick peep at the existing one this evening and the hoses (so many hoses) seem to be retained with some rather strange hose clips. Will I need to snip these off and use jubilee clips or is there a secret to reusing them?
Cheers
J.

Hi
Think the heater temp is what killed 2 JVC stereos in my P4.
All the best

guys, i forgot how hot the heater can get, i won the heater game
and the hot air coming from the vents is so hot that it can burn your hands, let alone touching the actual vent.
The car gets up to running temp in about 5 mins, wow!
I have a dodgy temp readout sometimes, the connection from the sensor needs to be cleaned i think.

I only use holy water imported from the vatican, mixed with virgin's piss and tiger saliva in the following precise ratios- 80%:18%:02%
Tap water is fine. Distilled water is better but lets face it it's a way of garages screwing you for £x per litre as with screenwash.
It's nice to have a car that warms up and a heater that works again isn't it Al'. I'm hoping now the heater is so good, we'll have a fab sping/summer!

I meant the smallest tube on the actual thermostat.
However...
I fitted today with no problems whatsoever and my old thermostat was stuck open.
I am a bit embarrassed to say that i didn't do it as i said i was going to... here are the excuses
I planned to buy the vinegar, di-ionised and distilled water when i was ready but my mechanic friend said he was working today and would i like to do it in the workshop.
So unprepared, i turned up with nothing, not even my new lambda sensor or freshly cleaned header tank and i just drained the coolant on the ramp via both drain plugs on the heads, then drove it off to the other side of the yard and let it cool down and then ran a hose through it, with drain plugs off.
I then put on the drain plugs hand tight and ran up to temp, let it cool down, drain, flush through and repeat 3 times.
Then very carefully loosened the hose pipes on the thermostat before removing it and fitted everything and put 3.5 litres of paraflu 11 and topped up with tap water. I will top up with neat paraflu 11 if needed from now on.
I can now play the heater game again, i challenge anyone to beat me!!
The mechanic said not to worry about using tap water???
