Out of curiosity, what happens if put one of the white Halford's oil filters on, and not one of the proper non-return ones?
And can you tell which type an oil filter is just by looking at it? |

watch fluid level in the coolant tank and oil level at the dipstick. If that smoke comes from oil or water you'll know for sure.

My P4 blew a head gasket about a year ago, they've both now been replaced with the heads skimmed and rebuilt and is running again, but it's smoking.
As the car's started from cold it's fine, then ... |

Suspect the one on my car could be welded up (although I would want to be quite a distance from whoever was repairing it),
