Was the Alfa 33 ever produced in Greece in CKD form? I heard this rumour, but am unable to find any information about it without spending too much time. It would be the early series I.

Does anybody here from Greece know anything about this?

I wondered exactly the same thing with my old Australia 1987 33. The compliance plate near the engine says "Built by Alfa Romeo Australia". So I think the parts were shipped over and put together here, perhaps because it was cheaper or perhaps to avoid import tax on ready assembled cars. The same may have happened in Greece. I wonder if the build quality was any better on the 33's not put together in Italy?!

I have never heard anything about 33s assembled here in Greece.

I don't know about the early series 1 cars because I was too young back then but it seems highly unlikely to me.

Perhaps Gritsop or Bill know something about that.

"Completely Knocked down"

Cars sent as parts kits, and then assembled, a bit like IKEA.

Hi,

Yes there used to be an assembly line factory located in Volos (Central Greece) that assembled as far as I know Series 1 33s and gearboxes for the Alfetta and its clones.

The plant was not operating for a long time since the quality of built cars was low and the goodwill of Alfa Romeo was declining and declining.

It was closed down by the Italians and many people were left out of work at that time.

Various stories have been heard about 33s that their wings were falling off the car all of a sudden! Instead of bolting it with 8 screws , only 3 or 4 were used and the rest were "stolen" by the workers who actually were selling them at big quantities...

Interesting, what do you think?

The same story had happened with the factory of Pirelli which was also closed down.

Regards,

Thanks for the info Gritsop - I think it's fascinating!! Smile

Also, 'Suds were built in Malta, Portugal, Malaysia and I guess a lot of other places!!!

Would be good to know more info about the Australian CKD outfit. Seems that CKD import was quite normal for Alfa back then!

Hi,

You 're welcome James. In fact my AR dealer characterises this era , a black one. Reputation of Alfa Romeo had seen better days...

I remember in 1990, when my family was seeking info for the 33, a question from a prospective Alfa 75 buyer in the AR showroom:
"I don't think that these gearboxes are like the ones when built locally!"
and the dealer said "Of course not, these happened in the old days..."

Regards,
