Hi

My engine was idling too low so my mechanic tuned it. He commented that the ignition was too far advanced and adjusted it.

Since then the engine overheats during idle with the fan operating.

I had put a new radiator and thermostat in the car during the previous 6 months. I had some bad oil leaks so decied to overhaul the top of the engine since the head gasket was leaking.

New water pump, reconditioned heads, engine flushed, temperature sensors replaced, all water and vac tubing replaced, thermostat checked etc.

Expecting everything to now run smoothly, I drove it back to the mechanics for a tune. The car overheated while idling in the garage.

Today, removed radiator and had it cleaned. It wasn't even dirty, and that cost me $85. I know when I replace it that the engine is going to overheat. The radiator is a Valeo - should the tubing contain turbinators or swirl wires for this model?

I have also taken out the welch plugs to properly flush the cooling system.

All in all, a very disppointing experience.

Can anybody else suggest a possible cause for the overheating?

Thanks

Are you using a mechanic who knows the Alfa 33? If not, I suggest you take it around to John French. They have just relocated to 19-21 Balaclava Street, Woolloongabba, ph 3391 6055.

Regards

Ken

the mechanic knows his Alfas. I am betting that the overheating has to do with sticking distributor centrifugal advance (lowest achievable idle 1100 rpm and very slow return to idle after acceleration). Will know tomorrow.

Thanks

There's always some new quirk to learn about these cars isn't there. Good Luck.
