I have a 16v with original alfa cat and exhaust, Fastech Tuning (De)???? chip and K&N cone filter.

A mechanic friend of mine, who used to work for alfa and now works for TVR, has offered to play with my car as he has access to a rolling road and remapping equipment.

Can remapping be done with everything in situ? How do they remap chips in the first place? If not i have the original out and in my hand, for him to play with.

I have heard of the 5 min mod to the airflow meter, to richen the mixture due to it getting lean as more air is going in when you fit a cone filter, is this the case? surely if more air is going in then the meter will register this?

Should i get a stainless steel sports cat? and larger back box? I would like to be kind to the environment and have a car that passes emmisions tests.

I need help in understand modding / remapping fuel injected cars because if i understand correctly there set up to be at the most efficient, which means burning all the fuel and leaving no waste. If you play about with remapping doesnt this just allow the injection period to be longer, so you get more fuel in making a larger more powerful explosion? However at the same time doesnt this leave unburnt fuel?? What about upping the fuel pressure and forcing air in ??

Does anyone have a good link or care to explain this in detail for me before i go down to my mates work?

Thanks

Hi,
i am no kind of expert, but i would say, if your mate knows what hes doing he could set your car to run greener/cleaner or to go faster, depending on ignition and fuel timing.
plus if you have a spare chip you could always replace it the modified one, if you didnt like the new setup?

Getting someone to remap your car is very costly so if its a freebie i would give it a go Smile

ps i have a q4 and the lastest must have is to have to chips eg economy and "fast-road" and a switch to choose. perhaps he could set youup something like this Very Happy

Hi Al,

The trick with getting more fuel in is to take the top off the air flow meter and click the 'W' shaped spring round a few notches on the gate. This has the effect of allowing the same amount of air to move the air flow gate a little further which the ECU interprets as more air - therefore more fuel.

It, along with a load of other stuff (all be it for the LE3 system, but still applies to yours) can be found here : http://www.hiperformancestore.com/L-jetronic.htm

Hope that helps!

Bob

thanks for the suggestion, i will put it to my mate, do you yourself have the 2 chip setup?i just wanted to read up on stuff before i let him loose on my car

bobbber
thanks, that link is already in my favourites Laughing and i have read up already on the 5 min mod re airflow meter mod. its normally about 4 or 5 notches, but i havent done it myself

I will put my car through an mot, maybe this weekend and see if it passes emissions as stock, if not then ill be forced to buy a new cat (i guess sports cat) and then let him play with it Smile

Hi Al,

I do not have a multi chip set-up, mine came from "evo-engineering" who used to specialise in integrale`s and q4`s too. so i have around 260bhp (with help from a few other mods) and 300lbs/ft torque. Very Happy Very Happy
but it also runs leaner and has good fuel economy on light throttle cruising (around 30mpg) so its a pretty well engineered item i believe.
(thats enough showing off now lol)

get it thro MOT then let him have a play, like you say. 150hp is supposed to be poss from tht motor without too much stress...
