Has anyone removed it / replaced, so that the 4wd is always permanently engaged, as opposed to standard when it becomes 2wd under braking?

You don't want that.
It disengages to protect 4x4 system parts.
If it wouldn't you would continute to transmit blocking force through 4x4 system and something would crack sooner then latter. _________________ Tino Vatavuk
