Hello from Greece,


Today I went to the mechanic in order to do the emissions check. The mechanic is just 4 kms from home.The car was running in normal temp and time to time the vent was on (so a temperature of 80 - 100 C). The mechanic inserted the tool in the exhaust and after testing the engine at idle he run it up to 2500 rpm.He told me that the car cannot pass the test. It has high percentages in CO & HC so a check has to be done in injectors, ecu , lamda sensor or even replace the catalyst.
Since this guy is not an alfa romeo specialist I went to the AR garage where the car is always serviced since May 1991 when it was bought.
He did the same procedure and the car passed the test ! here are the results:

2003:

800rpm 0.08%CO 65 HC PPm - lamda
2500rpm 0.06%CO 17HC PPm 1.003 lamda


last year:

800rpm 0.04%CO 7 HC PPm - lamda
2500rpm 0.06%CO 0HC PPm 1.003 lamda


The alfa romeo mechanic told me that the catalyst was probably not warm in the first test in order to function properly; in addition the emissions are OK taking into account that the car is 12 years old (series3) and the total kms are around 70000.

So my question is: are your cars having the same more or less percentages in emissions? Are there always variations in emissions depending in the total time the catalyst is working? Any additional info from somebody is really helpful just to have a different point of view.
