after changing my engine from a 1.7 8v to a 1.7 16v i am needing to get the spark plug leads on the distributer in the right order.can anyone tell me how to find top dead center on a 16v. there is a plastic plug beside the distributer,is it possible there are marks if i look through the hole or do i need to take the cam belt covers off and find out that way.

There are two marks on the flywheel, one is a "T" one is a "V". TDC is when "T" is adjacent to the pointer with no 1 piston at top of stroke, rotor arm pointing at no. 1 position is distributer.

Yes, the "T" and "V" marks can be seen from the hole when you take the small plastic cap you mention. Check if rotor is also pointing to cylinder #1 (right side of the car and the one near the main radiator).
Cylinders are numbered like this :
3 | 4
1 | 2
======
radiator
Firing order is : 1-3-2-4
