Hi all...

My 16v, has developed another problem. Confused

It refuses to start, and takes 3/4 times with the starter to get some life.
However, when it starts, i have to give the accelarator some strokes to prevent it from stalling.

It doesnt respond immediatly to the accelarator, and seems that it doesnt have enough power to stay "awake".
The sensation, is like driving a baddly tunned carbed engine. I press the accelarator, and it makes a "lag" (sometimes stalls), and then it makes some backfire through the exhaust and the car goes like crazy.
This is very anoying (and dangerous) in junctions, because when i think i still have time to get in the front of a big lorry, it fails, and i`m left in the middle of the junction.

Also the idle is non existent.

However, when the neddle of water temperature gets to 40/50ş, it starts working normally

I didnt started yet messing arround, but i would like to ear your oppinions

Thanks in advance
P.Camilo

hmmmmmmmmmm - it could be quite a few things but if it is backfiring that means you are getting fuel through but either a crap spark or a badly timed spark.it could be crap plugs or leads ,i would say plugs and when they warm up it is better but i have a feeling its something else , check the distributor and rotor arm, check cold start sensor ,check choke, i`m sure i will be able to think of something else later on but these kind of problems are hard to diagnose without going step by step checking or chsnging one thing at a time.

Where is the cold start sensor? Is there such a thing?

Hi all...

Thanks for your replies. This weekend, i`ve had a look, and discovered just one thing.
Unfortunatly, its not fixed yet, because i didn´t had a spare part.

So, what did i discovered????
There is a piece made of plastic with 6 hoses below the intake plenum.

One of the hoses (the larger one) goes to the fast idle actuator on the intake, one goes to the fuel pressure regulator, and the remaining 4 connect, each to nipples on the throttle bodies.
Somehow, 3 of the attaching points on this piece of plastic are broken, and the little hoses are not connected....

Anyone knows what this piece does??? I´ve alredy changed plugs (NGK), and checked the distributor, but the car maintains his problem.
Can this "piece of crap plastic" be causing the cold start problems???
Also Alfa Romeo parts dealer wants 65€ for it, and i would like to ear one oppinion if its worth or not to part with the cash. I can always, put some loctite on it and see if it holds Rolling Eyes

Had no problem with that part but pipes/hoses leading to it are known to cause bad idle, stall on acceleration and similar problems when cloged or cracked.
AFAIR it had something to do with fuel vapours vacume/preassure equalization on each cyl air intake throtle body and that fuel preassure/impulse valve thingy on picture Smile
I allways though is was only bottle/tank/cylinder with multiple hose extensions but if it's worth 65€ then there could be more then meets the eye.
Yes it can cause most of problems you mentioned in original post.

Hi again...

I`ve managed to get a "new" one, for 5€. Foud it on a junkyard, on a car that looked better than mine Crying or Very sad

Problem now, is to fit it in place. All 16v were fitted with A/C (in Portugal), and the bloody screw, is under the A/C compressor.
Looks that i`ll have to leave it till the weekend to do the job.

Bloody car. To get acess to a simple part, you have to strip the surroundig area completly.... Mad Mad

My 33 was hard to start today and idle was very very rough.
I thought I had jinxed it by remarking to my wife a couple of days ago about how little trouble it gives.
I checked the plug connection for the idle control, which has had moisture in it before now, causing idle problems, but it was OK.
Then I noticed the oil filler cap was off; as soon as I replaced it the idle was OK.
If the cap is removed, extra air is drawn into the engine downstream of the air flow meter, resulting in a very weak mixture.
The oil filler cap occasionally blows off due to crankcase pressure if I rev the engine hard, as the "O" ring on it is worn and hard, and it isn't a tight fit. Guess I'll need some new piston rings pretty soon though!

It happens the same here... Whenever i comment, that the car is behaving like a normal car, CABUMMMM, something goes terribly wrong. (And sometimes expensivly wrong) Laughing

Also checked that. It is a tight fit. But reading this, i remembered another thing.
When i replaced the clutch, i accidentally broke the vaccum hose that connects the left throttle bodie, to the servo, when tilting the engine.
I`ve arranged a bit of rubber hose and patch up the original one. Can this, also be affecting the idle???

SOLVED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The problem was really that "piece of plastic". After puting a new one...the car started first time, on the key...

Just for the record, to take the old one out, i had to remove A/C compressor, give some slack to the alternator (didn`t had to remove it), remove the admission plenum, the lever that sincronyzes the oppening of the throtlebodies and the hood....

4 hours of work just to replace a tiny piece of plastic. But it was worth it...

On carbbed cars, this piece is different...

I believe that its goal, its the same. Inside it, there is a wire brush (12), that with time gets filled with deposits. Its certanly worth to clean it up, and check if the hoses are not cracked...
