Like the subject says!!!
Was it only fitted with the 8valve or was the sixteen valve used as well? The car is a Greg Veloce
Thats G reg veloce, not the ultra rare Greg Veloce Pininfarina (Pinnie's younger brother's ill fated foray into car design)

S2 1.7 and sprint 1.7 only used 8valve, but early ones had mechanical tappets, so cam covers are flat (like the sud) , later ones had hydraulic tappets with the ugly cam covers.
See boxer tech stuff at www.alfisti.co.uk for details and pics

I'm pretty sure it's the 8V twin carbs with hydraulics. The mech tappets were for the 1.5's _________________ Each time I speed I say, "Dear lord, make me fast and accurate..." |

In UK the early 1.7 definitely had mechanical tappets.
This engine pic http://www.alfisti.co.uk/enginepics/veloce_eng.jpg is a 1987 1700cc which came out of an 87 (E reg) 33 s2 veloce. It now lives in my fathers Minari.

Oh. actually we've tried fitting the mechanical housing to the heads that came with the 1.7 hydraulics one. Apparently they couldn't fit due to the different valve lengths. _________________ Each time I speed I say, "Dear lord, make me fast and accurate..." |

|
|
In light of all discussed, is it possible to fit 16valve heads to 8valve shortblock? Or do pistons have valve cutouts? Mine is starting to smoke which may have been caused by the light corrosion to bore after engine rebuild on drive was interrupted
If not I could just fit the 8valve as a whole lump, or may even just go for best car out of the two. Mine has always had an annoying misfire which develops randomly so another engine and ignition entirely may improve this. Maybe i should start a whole new post. Were the series two mechanical or electrical fuel pumps? The one I'm looking at is carbed so mechancal i guess. Any major differences suspension wise? SDo many questions!

Its possible. But you need to change the pistons as well... The 8v pistons are "flat head" and the 16v are "dome head" with special inserts for the valves.
Fitting a 16v head, using 8v pistons, will result in very bad engine running.
But that will not be the end, of your problems. You will need to decide if you are sticking with carbs or "upgrade" to injection.
If "upgrading" is your goal, it will be a lot easier, because that way you can use all the "hardware" from a 16v (BUT YOU WILL NEED TO INSTALL ALL THE WIRING LOOM FROM A 16v AS WEEL). Maintaining the carbs, will see you strugling to fit the carbs, as the heads design is very diferent, and you will need a custom manifold to fit the carbs in place.

Basically, this is the main difference between injected and carbbed 1.7 blocks.
The 1.7 engine with carbs had a special housing for the mechanical fuel pump, but if you have a 1.7 IE block (or a 16v), you dont get that housing, because the pump is electrical, and is placed on the back of the car, near the tank.
But everything is possible, and you can "build" a special blanking plate for the pump.
All the best
