Does anyone know if there is an easy way to check if the electro-magnetic coupling on a P4 gearbox is working out of the car?

Yes, just put two wires to the battery.
This is the cable (red one) it has one red and one black wire i think, red goes on + and black on - You should hear a "click" if it's working, and propshaft should turn the gearbox aksle if in gear.

Don't think it should matter if it is in gear or not. If it did then the drive to the rear wheels would have to come from the first shaft in the gearbox and would turn at engine speed rather than the speed of the gearbox output.

All the best

So what does the electro-magnetic sensor detect?

It just connects / disconnects drive to the viscous coupling / back axle under control of a control unit. Few things cause it to disconnect (braking hard for example).

All the best
