Hi all, just looking at the lower wishbone of the front suspension with the view to making Urethane bushes and I can't fathom the design philosophy behind building in compliance with a rubber bush where the two pieces join.
Most examples of two piece wishbones on other cars have a solid connection between the two.
I know that a car will have a much smoother ride if the wheel can move slightly rearward as it moves up over road irregularities but this is usually achieved through the bushing at the front and rear of the wishbone so why the extra in the middle that the 33 has. Do other models of Alfas have the same?
It would be interesting to know if the guys racing Sud/33s retain the rubber or make this a solid connection. Or is there some small conflict in the geometry betwen the front and rear pivots that needs the extra compliance?
Comments?

Don't know why they did it like that. No other Alfas are like that at all. The only other fwd Alfa as opposed to Fiat based ones is the 164 which has a similar strut layout but conventional solid lower wishbones.
If the class rules allow it the middle bush is binned for racing. |

Hi
Not 100% sure, but think the inner mounts are not in line, which will deflect the suspension as it moves. If so then you couldn't use a solid mount (although you could use a rose joint or ball joint).
All the best

Thanks guys for your input, I will continue to investigate. The reason I asked was that I'm in the process of making Urethane bushes for the front wishbones and wondered how to treat the centre connection.
Just got my lowered springs today and want to get all shipshape befors fitting them.

Can you fit them before the 21st and make it to the oldschool.co.nz track day?
If you think that's a short deadline, check out what I've got to contend with:

Jeez Ben , thats a real bummer. I hope you called the cops as I've found out the hard way it's necessary to be able to hold the culprit accountable.
Will you be able to source the panels in Black? I could possibly help with a guard but not in Black. No decent door spares to speak of. I have one where the outer looks ok (albeit somewhat dirty) but the inner has some rust at the bottom. Still recoverable if you get stuck, however you can probably do better.
Much as I'm dying to get the springs on, I have to sort out a good strut for thr drivers side and make my Urethane bushes for the wishbones. Also new steering bearings which the budget doesn't run to this week. The wishbones have to replaced for a WOF by the 25th and I was hoping to do all the changes in one hit.
You asked before , I think, about the problem of the lowered springs coming loose on full droop. They have close wound coils at one end that act as a keeper spring on full extension but do not affect the ride hight or rate.
Keep me up to date with your progress and let me know if I can help.

I didn't call the cops at the time, no. The cop shop is even right around the corner from where the crash was! _________________ "Now, all that is left to do ... is wait that something else brokens, to fix up again!" |

had another think about the wishbones. the extra compliance bush isn't that uncommon, remember rwd Escorts? I seem to remember some Fiats being like that as well. |

Hugh, true, I had forgotten about the bushes on the Escort where the swaybar connected to the track control arm . The swaybar arm of course acting as part of the wishbone.Still I think we did act to stiffen this area.
