Hi Guys,
I've just had my Sud out on it's first two rally runs. I noticed on hard corners (i.e. tight hairpins taken at speed) that the oil pressure light sometimes comes on. The sump is well baffled but the engine is a little tired.... could this be a worn out oil pump? I'm currently using Mobil 1 oil (5w50), maybe a slightly thicker oil could a help a little as well?

depeng on your cornering speed and steepness a dry sump might be needed , but that is a lot of work.

Try keeping a little extra oil... atleast at max +... to keep the engine lubed up in corners...

I also tend to add a little extra oil (sump already has baffles). Had a similar problem with the oil light flashing on once after I checked the oil when the car wasn't on flat ground. So you could try filling to top mark on dipstick (car on flat ground) and then looking at the distance between bottom and top mark - then maybe add another 25%.
The downside of extra filling is the crankshaft is disturbing more oil in the sump as it rotates and adds some drag, so there could be a very small power loss - better a small power loss than lose a motor due to low oil pressure.
50 weight oil is probably o.k. BTW I'm told that a 5w50 (even a Synthetic) needs some viscosity index improvers to cover such a broad range as 5w50, so some people consider a 15w50 or 20w50 a better choice for racing:

beware of over filling. the oil light is for tourists, not rally drivers.
Fill to the right level and don't worry so much as long as it still goes vrooom! penrite 30 hpr for that motor
Start over filling and you might end up with a fire. The over filled 8v will sometimes blow a bit out the filler on to your headers..noice when your having fun......stinks too. |

I wouldnt overfill the oil in case the crank whips it up. A thicker weight would help.
