Hi

About 28mpg in normal use. Can coax a bit more out of it in motorway use from the P4.

The old 1.3 carbed S3 would manage 39mpg on long motorway runs sitting at about 80~90. And about 20mpg around town.

All the best

Keith

My 33 does something about 550km with full tank, 54 litres. Don't know about the MPG as we don't use gallons in Finland Smile

I hope that i can get better result after adjusting the carburetors, because the workshop manual says 6,1 litres/100km when driving 90 km/h.. I would be happy to get even 8l/100km as it's now something like 9-9,5l/100km.

Havent done enough miles yet to know what the 1400 16V will do but my old 1600 8V used to do 25 - 30 on a run or on the stages we used to get around 8MPG Wink

I'm back up to the 30's, 35.7 MPG, wahoo, after new lambda sensor and thermostat and proper calibrated AFM.

Hello BigAl,

Can you please tell how much did the new lamda cost? and regarding the thermostat how does this affect consumption?

Thanks in advance

A cold engine (from a faulty thermostat) will trick the ecu into a richer mixture (ie, like a choke).

All the best

Hi Dr. A
The lambda sensor cost £45+Vat.
The thermostat was causing bad fuel consumption because the car would only get to proper running temp if stationary, as soon as i was on the move it dropped down to 60c ish. I was going to put a hose clamp on and remove when necessary but decided against that and i was going to put card in front of the radiator where is no fan but decided against that too. At a certain temp the ecu switches from running with a choke, because the engine is cold, to normal running. I couldn't find out what this temperature was so i tried to fool the car into thinking it was running a normal temp by putting a 330Ohm resistor in place of the CTS "thermistor" but after 5 mins of no fluctuation the ecu thinks its a dead sensor and ignores it. An electrician friend was going to make a circuit that fluctuates between 2 set resistor values every second, with an led flashing to show it was correctly connected and working.
It was definitely the thermostat causing the bad fuel consumption because the AFM was calibrated, when the car was at running temp and even with no lambda correction i was seeing 32 mpg before the thermostat got stuck open.
Hope i haven't waffled on too much Laughing

Big Al, you haven't waffled too much but you have made me suspicious that you might be crazy, going to such lengths to avoid changing a thermostat!
With the engine not up to proper operating temp, the oil might not be either and you're gonna feel guilty about driving hard.

I took the top off one of the Weber carbs on my 1.5TI last weekend and was surprised to find no fuel in there at all. So every time you park your pancake-filter-equipped carby 33, you lose all the fuel in the float bowls of both carburettors plus, it seems, a lot of the fuel from the engine bay fuel lines. All via evaporation. With me only driving my two series 2 33s for short trips on weekends, it's no wonder they get pretty lousy mileage. Wink

Laughing what was crazy was the price i was going to be charged for a new one, £45+vat P&P, compared to around £13 from alfashop with no p&p as it will come with other orders. However thanks to another member i sourced it from somewhere else. I'm sure i have paid double in fuel though Embarassed
You were right, i did feel a little guilty when i did occasionally give it some as i normally don't rev past 3k when not at running temp. I found myself yearning for a bit of stationary traffic enabling me to use the rest of the rpm range.

I did pose the question about oil temps vs coolant temp and if after the normal time and engine takes to get to temp, would the oil be up to temp as well.

Must admit, when i was in my teens i wasn't bothered, but with today's petrol prices and now i'm older and possibly wiser i find myself trying to get better mpg. Shoot me, put me out of my misery, i am no longer a petrol head Crying or Very sad

Surely it's useful as a measure of how sorted the engine is.

Al, did you use a Bosch lamda sensor or a generic one?

I took the Spyder out for a 4 hour return trip to Essex last week and got 30mpg.

Mainly motorway 65 - 80mph, the rest country lane blasting. Super unleaded. 15" wheels with 195/60 15" tyres must obviously help.

Oil will take far longer to warm up than the coolant.

All the best

Yes, over at alfaowner.com.
They're strange people, with the money to buy new cars but not to buy fuel. Confused
Here fuel economy is a measure of how much is wrong with your 33.

You're quite right Ben. On the GT forum there is an ongoing debate as to whether diesel is better than petrol etc, really quite dull. It seems anyone who has bought the diesel version seems to need to justify it to everyone else, zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Hi

They seem very proud of the torque, while forgetting that the lack of revs means higher gearing, which wastes most of the torque.

All the best
