|
|
Hi,
What would be the general consensus on the lifespan of 16v belts and pulleys in age?
I'm starting to mentally compile my (long) list of 33 jobs for when it warms up a bit.

I'd say 36,000 miles or every 3 years (whichever comes first).
However, lifespan can reduce greatly (to around 5 minutes) if contaminated with certain fluids.

@ Lee,
Remember kids, catching "it" between the cambelt and cog of a running engine is not big, clever, but may be painful.

My rule on this is retension every 6k and replace every 12k.
The scarceness of spare engines keeps my paranoia alert and active when the 16v is on the road, once saw a 145 1.7 16v drop a belt at 12K after the engine was rebuilt from the last belt loss, i say loss because it just fell off, like the time after tis the tensioner wheels, the bearings in them are shockingly bad and let the belt sort of lean, until, one day, it just drops off. |

the 145 -6 and 147's tensioner's are notoriously pap, I think it's down to these the newer car's service intervals were cut by half. _________________ PHAT 33 |

Hi,
16v has longer belts compared to 8v engine. And unfortunately they like to lenghten a lot.
Now problem is that AR first said you should retension them after 2-3k km
just to change that notice to never retension them after 33 stop being produced? There was something with retensioning prolonged belt would greatly stress it and would cause premature wear/snap...bla bla.
So I don't retension them but funny thing is that I ended changing them almost every 2 years.
Along with belts you must change bearings and waterpump if you can find quality SKF or better or you migh be ending up like me to change all of that 1 -2 months later _________________ Tino Vatavuk

On 16v 2 tensioner wheels/bearings and 2 idler wheels/bearings.

Aha, I'd always assumed the wheels came with their bearings. _________________ '93 Black 33 1.7 16v |

Yep you're right they do. The bearings are in the centre of the plastic wheels.
