Hi all,
the Syncromesh has detoriated on my 33 (1.7. 8valve) to a point where getting a clean selection into 2nd is a bit of an art. car has just done over the 100k miles mark. 2nd gear a bit crunchy as is reverse. other gears a bit sensitive.

is it worth getting a gearbox service kit from justsuds. which cost £85 to do the seals gaskets, synchros and oil change.
or try find an old gearbox from a car thats done less miles.?

also i think some drive bearing or joints or something is worn as slight knocking noise while driving. would this be a pain to fix?

Jonathan

Hi,

a worn syncro of the 2nd gear is a commom problem. However from your description I understood, that also other gears (3rd, 4th, 5th) give slight problems. I think that worn syncros of the high gears are quite rare.
A cause for crunching gears may also be a dragging clutch, that is the clutch does not disengage completely when you press the pedal. You may also try to bleed the clutch slave cilinder with fresh brake fluid and see if anything improves.

good luck

that sounds like a good idea.

its mainly 2nd gear which is a problem. 4th, 5th no problems
3rd gear ..hmmm.. no thats ok.

1st and 2nd are the baddies. oh..oh and reverse.
sometimes if i am driving in zen in total harmonious mind-body-gearbox synchronisity I get second gear perfect .(at which I promptly lean out the window and yell to the other drivers "did you hear that...PERFECT! ah ha" )..but usually before changing into second I grimmace a bit and test before i commit to throwing the gear stick bottom left. so can be art and zen of changing gear

unfortunatly I cant do a sporty change from 3rd to second. which is fine since am taming the ego. Wink
perhaps I should light some inscense sticks in my car.!

Will bleed clutch slave cylinder - hopefully that will help as much it can!
Didnt really fancy getting dirty with the gearbox. perhaps I should put new oil in it at some point.

Hi

The trick to getting from 3rd to 2nd is to double declutch. Even if your synchros are fine it will extend their life

All the best
