Rear lights and dash are on same fuse/wiring, yes? Don't think there is a relay involved?
First points of call I reckon are block connectors - especially the big one between the heater and master cylinder in engine bay. I hope it's not a case of two wires having touched somewhere in the loom. Anything disturbed when changing the rack? Good luck.

I can try disconnecting the rear light loom, i will loosen off the fuse box and check the connector on the back also, so if its the rear light part of the loom it should work, if not its the dash part of the loom, help!!!

I was looking at the wrong fuses, the one I replaced was the middle row 2nd and 3rd down, one of them must have blown at the same time as the 3rd row bottom, which I have now replaced and all is ok.

There is a pink/black wire
that is live when the ignition is turned on, it is paired with a brown/white wire, I cant believe that this is left loose. I have taken the cover off the brown/white wire and put it on the pink/black wire and put gaffer tape over them.
Any idea what they are for?

I wonder if that shorted on the back of the fuse box causing this

I will cut off the connector and crimp on a new one.

I take it that your reverse lights are working?

Fuse blew again and blew 4 more, how do i test when i disconnect things to find out where the problem is without blowing fuses?

There is a multi block connector under the fuse box by the front of the drivers door that goes to the rear down the right of the car, this branches off and goes under the drivers seat to the center console area, I have disconnected that and the fuse still blows. Could something near the gear stick or something else at the rear cause that fuse to blow?

Does anyone know exactly what the 3rd row bottom right fuse feeds?
My plan is to lower the fusebox, remove all feeds from the fuse in question and add them back 1 at a time until I find the one that blows it.
http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x73/bigal333/fuesboxearthconnectorfordash.jpg

I think it powers the following

Rear side lights
Rear number plate lights
Dash lights
Glove box light
Centre console lights, including cigarette lights & heater control lights?
boot light?

Anything else from the rear, like fuel gauge sender?

The only after market electrical things I have fitted are console LED lights, some of which have blown but I have not got round to replacing them. Oil pressure & volt meter gauges, the lights for which are powered from the cigarette light and an ignition live feed from a spare wire from what I think is one of the connectors for the alfa control, which I don’t have.

All gauges work btw and rear brake lights, indicators and reverse light and fog light.

I made a reusable fuse by cutting the top of the plastic surround off of the old one and using a single strand of wire wrapped it around the exposed poles, I tested it and it blew/broke when turning on the lights.
I then went straight to this connector

and disconnected it, it has caused me problems in the past, I replaced the broken wire/fuse, turned the lights on an it didn’t blow. I removed the replaceable fuse with a normal one to check and all was ok Smile
I squashed the spade connectors together to make better contact, replaced the reusable fuse and tested again, all ok.
Where can I get connectors like this

With the hole in the side to hold it in place in the block connector?

Off now to get some replacement fuses as I used all my spares up Smile

Several moons ago I had the live wire from the gearbox reverse light switch come of its connector and short out on the body work causing the rear light fuse to blow, happend twice before I discovered it.

According to my French Alfa manual fuse 17 (last one bottom right) protects:

-Front and rear side lights. Front right and rear left circuit may be separate to front left and rear right - something to do with Alfa Control maybe.
-Side light indicator on dash instrument binnacle.
-Number plate lights
-Center console lights(heating controls, cigar lighter, ashtray.
-Glovebox light.
-Instrument panel lights and rheostat to adjust intensity (if fitted).
-Clock light.

Plus some other things which I don't really know the meaning of.

Sorry it's in French but maybe someone can say what they do or if you have them on your car:
1/ Consentement Fog lights(Maybe allows fog lights to work only on dipped)
2/ Consentement Indicators working(involves central indicator and hazard lights control unit I think)
3/ Headlight height adjusters(if fitted)
4/ DIM-DIP exclusion relay(if fitted)
5/ Alfa Control (front right and rear left side lights) (if fitted)

The words in italics have not been translated.
