Finally given up on the old mechanical fuel pump.
Once the carb bowls are dry or almost empty it's a real pain to get the car started again.

The speed at which the starter motor rotates the engine is just not enough to prime the carbs. Maybe I do have a worn pump shaft that drives it.

I bought a Hueco german made pump today.

133010
130 l/hour!!
suction type so will be mounted in the engine bay.
2.2 psi on pump side
2.9 psi on suction side.

Very nice solid pump. inlet and outlet angles can be rotated 220 degrees to suit engine fuel pipes.

Hopefully tonight I will test it, rig it up temporarily and see how it fills the carbs up easily with just the turn of a key.
No more complaints from the wide either when she can't start it.

Brilliant!

Pump in a temporary set up to test and worked like magic!
It is self regulating, you saw in the filter it pumped loads of fuel when starting up (much more than the old one), then when the carbs were full it slowed down to almost nothing.

Happy! Smile

Just need to wire it up safely and give it some test rides.

Then comes my MSD.

It was a different car today to work.
Much better response, acceleration, idled cold much better. Should have made this change years ago.

I'm assuming now my old mechanical pump had a worn shaft on the pump and was exceedingly weak.

Have to re-balance my carbs as they have changed characteristic though.
Probably getting a more constant level in the bowls.

I recommend this change to anyone with an old mechanical pump.

Could be usefull also for a 33 with an old GPL system
like mine if I will have to service the original pump (now working well),
as also with pump in good condition if I drive until GPL finish,
is a little long to make gasoline arrive to carbs
if car is not already launched at high speed..

What is the cost of the pump you choised?
Where you mounted the electric pump near motor (what heigh)?

Really nice the pump stop/regulate itself automatically,
so it not abuse of the return circuit from carbs to the tank
and of electric power Smile

Ps.: if all go well with the new one, are you going to remove
the mechanical one with its push rod to save some power Shocked ?
(a plate protection have to be build to close where the pump where
or I think one can remove only the push rod and leave the pump)

I could remove the old pump but I will keep it in place as a back up in case the electric one dies. But it's a very reliable german pump.

It cost about 85 USD. Cheaper than the silver top facet pumps and it has a higher output.

I have mounted it high just next to the right of the expansion tank. About the height of the top of the carb.
I have 2 filters, one before and one after.

The one before is a glass with a metal filter that is washable.
Second after is a cheap paper one, a bit finer.

No loss in suction with both filters on. It appears to have a very strong suction which is what I wanted.

I had empty pipes when I installed it, when I switched it on, the fuel filled the filters and pipes up so quickly, within seconds. Very impressive.
