Carbs not blocked, see above.
I've even tried easy start and it won't fire.

Heidi I'm seriously considering it

Yeah are the plugs still dry / can you smell petrol on them?

The spark timing wouldn't be out by 360 degrees would it? That is the spark is at the end of the exhaust stroke instead of the compression stroke.

Are you getting any firing at all(like flames coming out the exhaust, pops and bangs)??

When you say the spark is "good" what colour is it? Might be worth trying another coil and electronic ignition module.

I've been out again this morning in the sunshine
Spun it over while pumping the throttle, then removed plugs which are drenched in fuel as you would expect.
Then I tested for a spark again, even in the bright morning sun I can see a good bright spark (no not Big Al), I also checked that it is timed correctly ie at approx tdc dizzy points to no1.
Tried changing it by 180deg where it was chuffing and banging out of the exhaust, so it must of been right.
I just don't understand why it won't fire or even make some attempt to fire.

Had a plug out again and had a good long look at the spark.
I would say it is variable and jumps about not firing at the same place on the electrodes.
Does this point towards the coil/electronic ignition module?
Is the module the thing mounted under the coil?
Is it still possible to get them?

The module should be something like this(french site)
http://www.webdealauto.com/fr/appareil-de-commande-systeme-d-allumage/valeo-245510.932.402997.96.html

I think I have one in the barn. And a coil come to that.

Make sure both carbs aren't flooding with a constant drip. ??

Timing belts still in place? Engine timing correct between crankshaft and both camshafts?
How old are spark plugs? Sometimes if they are the resistive type they can get badly damaged during cranking attempts with the engine flooded and although they exhibit good spark, they won't fire the engine. I once spent some time on a non-starting GTV6 that way. Replacing all six plugs got it to fire right away!

regards,
zp

So new coil and module arrived Thursday and between storms today (Saturday) I managed to fit the coil as I felt this was the most likely culprit.
Battery a bit week, due to lack of charging and a lot of fruitless attempts at starting, so after connecting a spare it fired straight up.
Left it running while I refitted the airbox etc.
Then got in put in gear and off we go, bit rough at first but after a couple of miles sweet as ever.
And once the brakes cleaned up I was able to stop Laughing
Anyway I've put the swan vestas away for the time being.

Well done.

So it's not sure whether it was coil or module. Very Happy

OOPs sorry misread it. It was the coil.

Excellent! Unusual for those coils to go.
