Hi,

For some time now i've seen the battery warning light glow faintly in the dark when the lights were on. The culprit was the alternator power connection - the blade terminals age poorly and replacement terminals are not available.
I've changed the alternator and wiring for a VW one. Here's how:

1. Buy a 70A alternator for a VW LT or rabbit 1

2. Swap the fan and pulley. I shaved one washer a little bit to achieve the correct flange distance

3. Mill the adjusment bracket to make it flush with the rest of the bracket

4. rotate the front casing 1/4 of a turn respective to the rear casing in order to have the power cable point downwards rather than upwards to avoid interference with the intake manifold

5. install new wiring using ring terminals and protect it using heatshrink

6. Fit the alternator to the car using the correct belt (Gates 6214MC)

Now the voltage is rock steady and battery light stays off.
Hope this can be of some use for others looking to upgrade the charging system.

Regards,

That's a great article, ZP. Thanks.

I hope you find time to add it to the information on your very useful website.
