Some confusion about gearbox ratios. The figures I have say a 1.5ti gearbox has a different ratio to a 1.7 cloverleaf ? Figures taken from the ebay CD. Yet the figures in the menu item above say they are exactly the same. Fuel consumption figures in handbooks say that the 1.7 reaches a higher top speed and does more miles to the gallon. Doesn't this imply that the 1.7 gearbox is a little longer legged? Whatever, can I fit a 1.5 gearbox to a 1.7 engine with no fuss and if it were shorter geared would I get better acceleration at the cost of lower top speed/fuel economy?? Cheers. _________________ Owner's Club 33 Registrar. Now from P4 & S2 1.7 QV

I think the answer might be different final drive ratios.

Hi
The figures above are taken from various Alfa workshop manuals over the years. The Ebay CD is a copy of the one I made.
All the best

HI
My impression from driving our 1500s compared with our 1700 is that the 1700 has a longer first gear and the other ratios may be a bit closer. This impression could come from a taller diff. ratio but there is a definite difference in getting off the line.

I had a 1.5ti that I 'upgraded' to 1.7. This kept the 1.5 box with the 1.5 diff.
The s2 1.5 diff is lower geared, so you do get better acceleration, with the trade off of lower top speed. The same can be achieved by using smaller overall tyres, which I also did, by running 195/45 R15, which is a few mm smaller diameter than the 185 R14 stuff.
For my P4 project, long term I am considering trying to get hold of the diffs/transmission from a mark 1/2 4x4 1.5, as they have the same lower ratio, as compared with the s3 1.7 P4. It is only a subtle difference, but could be worth a bit of time.
The boxes themselves, certainly all the five speed stuff, are all very similar, with the differences being mostly in the fianl drive _________________ Regards

The table you find here on the page by clicking on the icon on top, has the right figures (as far as I can see looking at it fast).
But you always has to be very accurate when asking and telling which car you have and from which car and year the alternative gearbox is.
It is not enough to say 1.7 engine, even not 1.7 QV, because a Serie 2 Alfa 33 1.7 QV with injection (they are found in some countries in 1988-1990) has another diff. than the same car with carbs.
An Alfa 33 1.5 ti has the same ratios and diff. as the 1.7 QV ie, and you can fit the 1.5 ti gearbox to the 1.7 QV ie, but there is a slight difference in the clutch case to make room for the crank sensor on the ie-models, so you will have to modify a little.
If the situation is, that you have a S2 1.7 QV carb, then fitting the 1.5 ti gearbox is no technical problem, but the diff. is different (9/35 against 10/37) giving a 5% shorter gearing in all gears (as the internal gear ratios are the same).
