Hi all, I have a 16V engine I got for a good price, and planning to fit it to my 33.

I looked around for some tuning I could do to my new engine before fitting it but found that hotter cams or head work reduces everyday driveability... as in basically all mods you can perform. So the only thing I am left is installing a turbo, which isn't such a good idea (torque steer, chasis stifness, no knowledge and PRICE!) and boring to have the 1.9 BOXER

I can see that the primary concerns into doing such a thing is getting the right pistons and gaskets. But suppose I can have the gaskets made and got hands on the pistons, what other things will I have to change/replace?

Remapping will be necesary and what else? cam reprofiling? I know it is supposed to be pricey...I got the engine for such a cheap price that I have leftover money, hope I don't need an Alfa tuning specialist as I will be doing this mostly myself.

I am considering this cause I don't really want a high BHP engine with no torque.... Alfa engines have never been like that, like Hondas. Twisted Evil

Thanks!!

The costs will all be in finding the pistons and gaskets - the rest of the engine will be largeley untouched, with the exception of the block. The block would obviously have to be bored out, and maybe overbored for liners to maintain cylinder wall thickness.

In addition, the pistons you use (and any good piston supplier should be able to come up with something you can use, though don't expect them to be cheap) may not fit without machining the crown for deck height and valve pockets. This has to be done by someone who knows what they are doing to ensure correct copmpression ratio, squish areas and combustion chamber shape, though th 16v pistons are relatively simple like that, most of the chamber is in the head.

The pistons may have to be modified to make sure there is no interference between the crank and the piston skirt. If you are lucky, the gudgeon pin (piston pin, wrist pin, little end, depending on where you are in the world) will be the same diameter, if not, they have to be machined for the correct size and a spring clip groove. Alternatively you can modify the connecting rod little end.

You will have to find a gasket from somewhere, probably get one made - money, bye bye..... Copper is one of the ways, where a copper sheet is machined and then annealed to give the correct properties. Wills rings can also be used t make up the fire ring, and modify existing 16v gaskets to leave a space for them, but the block will have to be machined to take them. Someone like Burtons, in the UK (a Ford specialist) may be able to quote on that.

hope this helps

Les

I am about to finish my project with a 1832 cc boxer with 90 mm pistons, computerrized race-injection, alu flywheel and many things, but would prefer to wait to tell about the results until we have finished it. It is a project to about 10.000 Euro, 20.000 AUS Dollars.

All the parts are prepared and must now be put together.

But specifically I can tell that most manufacturers of forged pistons can deliver pistons which will fit. The cost for my 90 mm pistons was 1.200 Euro. The make is JE bought via AH Motorsport in England.

Additionally to boring out 3 mm the crankcase of the block has to be modified.

Head gaskets are also a problem. A friend of mine arranged with the original supplier of Alfa Romeo headgaskets, Reinz, that they made a batch with 90 mm, but he had to buy quite a lot, I think for about 5.000 Euro. He sell them for 200 Euro for a set. He still has a few left. If you are interested, you can contact me, redaktoer@alfaklub.dk.
