Hi,

I would like an opinion from u guys out there.

My gearbox bottom gasket needs to be replaced. Gearbox oil is leaking onto my exhaust and it gets very smelly when it is being burnt off. It has got a bit worse the last few days, dripping about 5 tablespoons of oil everytime I drive and stop. Sad

My questions are:

1) If I change the gasket, I would have to remove the gearbox l.The problem is I just changed my gearbox oil 3000 kms ago. Furthermore, I'm using fully synthetic gearbox oil and it ct a bomb. Would it be ok to re-use the gearbox oil? Crying or Very sad

2) Considering the problem, is it ok to drive the car?It's Easter and my mechanic is closed till next Tuesday, but I do have to get around till then.

Any advice would be gladly appreciated.

No you dont have to take the gearbox out to change the gasket.
When you drain the oil out check the condition,if it seems clean reuse it.
Though if you have lost a substantial amount you will have to buy more anyway.
One thing you could try is to check the tightness of the bolts,they will sometimes go up quite a bit and could cure the leaking.

Hi

I agree with Ian, but make sure you use a VERY clean bowl to drain the gearbox oil into and keep it out of the way and covered once you start to take the plate off.

Ian: I meant drain the gearbox oil......not take out gearbox.

Ok, so now that I know I can re-use the oil, what about driving the car under these conditions (leaking gearbox).
At what point would I know that I have a major problem and should not be driving?

Just explaining to you that I meant "drain gearbox oil" instead of "remove the gearbox" from my first thread.

Probably be OK for a short while. However remember that motorcyclists dont appreciate having slippery oil patches on the road Rolling Eyes

Biggest problem will be if the oil level drops too far as it will damage the gearbox

when you are anyway lying under your car, also replace the ringgasket (?) of the shifting lever.
