Hi People,

Friday afternoon, managed to skip out of work early, all is looking good until my clutch pedal goes heavy and I'm unable to select any gears without lots of nasty noise. Anyway my series 2 1.5 Qv is one the side of the road. The clutch slave seems to be pushing out ok, tried a bit of bleeding, but made no difference, though I imagine the clutch would feel lighter if that was the prob. From reading previous posts its sounds likes the clutch is poked.
Anyone in NZ got an idea of clutch kit costs, I'll have a crack at replacing it myself as always I have no money.... Rolling Eyes

Any help is appreciated, Kevin

I think Ben said $350 for a new one, around $100-120 from a wreckers for a sound unit. It's the fingers on the pressure plate that wear and a new throwout bearing will probably be needed as well. Good luck.
Regards Eddie

On the topic of clutches, does anybody know what could be causing my car to occasionally judder when driving away in 1st gear? It only happens once in a while, and only in first gear when releasing the clutch. The sensation is almost like the clutch disc is skipping backwards and forwards, and doesn't engage properly. The clutch does not slip at all under hard acceleration, and both the master and slave cylinders are in good condition (master is new, slave has just been refurbished). Could it be oil getting onto the clutch plate?

Confused

Regards,

Paddy

hi

heavy pedal+no declutching : it looks like one of the helicoidal springs fitted in the center of the disc has come loose, has fallen out of its place, and is stuck between the disc and the diaphragm, preventing the compression of the mechanism.

clutches are available from Borg&Beck (Delphi automotive supplier) and Valeo (supplier of all 33 clutches fitted at the factory).
i heard there is also a LUK unit but never saw one.
OMP provides a "reinforced" clutch but from what i heard this is more a "racing" clutch than an everyday-usage clutch.

prices in europe are around 150 euros for a new unit, complete with disc, mechanism, and release bearing.
a good mechanic will change it in 4 hours.

the original clutch on my 33 (Valeo) lasted 220 000 kms and i then replaced it, but wasn't dead though.

good luck,
regards,
zp

Hi Kev,
I picked up a new clutch kit from Turin imports in Adelaide for $220 Australian, they airfreighted it to me in Queensland for another $30. The cheapest quote in Brisbane was $330. Hope this helps.

Thanks again,

I got a GST Nuova kit from Euro-Italian (09 4449817) in Albany for $265 inc gst. I've pulled a sicky from work and I'm now in the process of droppping the box...Oh for the money to pay a garage to do what they do best.

Just out of interest does anyone know if the 33 diesel clutch is the same as the normal 33 one? I only ask as diesel clutches are far superior in robustness while similar in price to their petrol counterparts and I always have fitted diesel clutches to my petrol cars when replacing.

Gary, your fascination with diesel is starting to get out of hand.

Uprated clutches is fine, but where will it end.......

I think you need to get out there and use some revs, try doing that in a Diesel Laughing Laughing

Matt you are dead right I need a Sud project badly, for weekend antics. After me good lady's horrid escort diesel the new Xantias XUD unit's refinement has me under it's spell....... OK I'll shut up!! If I was working up in the dales again then it would be an Alfa on the drive but as most of my mileage is around town/motorway at the moment the horse for this course is the Xantia ooooooooooh comfort put's the 94 Audi 80 V6 to shame!

A shot of Alfa adrenaline is deffo needed though rather than the Xantia's Benzodiazapine impregnated seats, oooooooooooooh comfort. Maybe I'm getting old! Oooooooooooooh comfort.

Did I mention that Xantia's are a rather comfortable car? Just did a trip down to Cardif (350miles) and arrived like a new pin if that had been in a 33 I'd have been in bit's, dead on my feet.

But I sure miss the A road blasts!!!!

The clutch is in the car is going! It took probably 12 hours over a week and weekend all told....Thats without proper lifting gear, some improvised tools and a few mistakes along the way.

Out of interest is there anyway that the spline that the clutch plate slides on just needed a bit of grease? As there seemed to be no visible problems with the old clutch and pressure plate.

Anyway a double thickness cardboard box to lie on, a bit of 4x2 for a pillow and latex gloves made the job a bit more comfortable.

My missus wants me to get rid of it now....

Thanks Kevin
