I have always thought the 90's 33 had less appeal, and although it has nice, clean lines, the 80's 33 have more character. Also, I have been test driving 90's 33's recently and they all seem to have vague steering on the motorway at speed, as though you could cough and end up in the other lane! I guess this is over assisted power steering at work. And the stock factory steering wheel is very dull and boring, plus the door handles spoil the lines. What do you think? |

I had a '91 33 series 33 wagon up until March and I have to agree about the light and vague steering. On strut bearing was worn out totally, which caused some roughness and lack of 'self-centering', also a tendency for the car to continue to pull slightly in the direction you last turned. Replacing the bearing made a huge difference, but I still felt the steering was too light at motorway speeds. _________________ http://www.trofeoalfasud.com

I know a lot of people here will probably come down on me like a shower of sh*t for saying this, but I actually don't think any of the 33's are pretty. Don't get me wrong - i don't think them UGLY just not pretty - i own one for God's sake!
The series I and II, in my opinion, were a poor replacement for the delightful Alfa Sud, in almost every respect. The 90's 33's look much more modern and sportier, but are too boxy and out of proportion for my liking.
If we're talking pretty Alfa's then I think Evan's on the right track - a stainless steel bumper Sud and a 105. Arguable the 'modern' Alfas don't get prettier than those two.
Then again, the 33, like all Alfas is a driver's car. It's got everything that counts in so far as performance and handling. Whilst it could scrub up in the looks department a little, it aint at all shabby.

I must agree with you Ravi.
When I first got my Series 3 ('92), I didn't find it, in any way, good looking (but not ugly either! ). However, as time has gone by, I've come to like its rough shape, especially the front. The one thing I still like the least, is the rear end. I'm thinking about getting a rear spoiler (the one with the brake lights) to help with this.

I think the 33 looks OK, and I tend to prefer the series 1/2 marginally more than series 3. I can't get used to the series 3 asymmetrical tail lights with a reversing light only on one side - that's uncommon on New Zealand cars and so looks wrong.
Any 33 with hubcaps, unpainted black bumpers and no spoiler can look pretty unexciting.
There are meaner looking Alfas than the 33 (see Autodelta 3.7 GTA thread!), sexier Alfas but also uglier ones (I don't like the 145, and the 90 isn't so hot either). |

Oh yeah, I like the S1&2 33's better also. Especially the door handles, front grille and interior.
I think the solo reverse light on the S3 is cool.
Maybe I should ditch my sorry-looking hubcabs in favour of some nice rims, do something about my bumpers, and see if I could find that spoiler. Haha, right on the mark there Ben. _________________ //Wizz

Aesthetics gentlemen? My daughter who owns (but doesn't drive as yet) our white s2 1.7 wouldn't look twice at an s3. The same applies to several of my friends. Myself, I like the s3 bonnet line to and including the sloping grill . All in all I could live with an s3 but probably prefer the s2.
Ravi. The 33 styling was the forerunner of the wedge type of profile that so many have since copied and for its time was, in my opinion, innovative ,stylish and reasonably elegant. AND it handled and was quick.
As I get more into Alfas I am learning to appreciate the Sud more and more. It is a classic. But I'm afraid I prefer the 33 styling. Nobody's perfect eh

I actually don't think the 33 was a forerunner (in terms of Alfas) in anything actually, Eddie - I mean the Giulietta had the wedge shape 10 years before, the sud had all round discs, the same boxer engine, more precise steering and handled better too...
But I agree with you - in terms of all cars at the time, the 33 certainly was a forerunner in every department. Then again - it IS an Alfa! |

Wizz - sorry, I should have checked whether anyone on here had a 33 matching that description!
Look at it this way - it doesn't matter if you scratch hubcaps on the kerb when parking, also no rear spoiler means much better rear visibility, which the 33 is short of. And my last car had black unpainted bumpers. They're so handy - you can actually bump things and the scrapes won't show. =)
(I also miss my towbar, it was helpful when anyone parked too close behind me...) |

What, the ones on the inside?

Good man. Just what I thought. Except I don't have a family of my own so I don't really know how it compares with anything else in that respect. _________________ Hugh B

Did you respray it yourself? Wish I had the dosh to do it, as my 33 would surely benefit from a lick of new paint (it's more 'rosa' than 'rossa' these days).
The power 'hesitating' is a problem on my 155. I'll be driving along at constant throttle and it will just 'stutter', as if it's misfiring or something. I've been told by the previous owner that it has all new plugs though so I'm not sure what else could be the problem, yet...
Thanks to my new job I'll be able to give both my motors some attention pretty soon. The only problem now is I haven't got the other crucial ingredient needed for such care - TIME... _________________ Hugh B
