|
|
I've now got the 16V engine fitted in the Veloce engine bay. I've discovered a problem I hoped I wouldn't encounter, but I have - the Series 2 radiator fan won't fit because it fouls against the cam cover. See (sorry about the slow loading):
The framework just won't fit with the larger cam cover. It's funny, because I've seen pictures of people's series 2 conversions with the 16V in and the original fan there also. Wonder how they got it to work - I'm buggered if I know how to do it
Anyway I'm going to have to fit aftermarket fan(s) to the FRONT, blowing INWARD, as there's no better location. My all important question: where can I get aftermarket fans from? Needless to say it's not something I've ever looked for. _________________ Hugh B

No good, I'm afraid. Even bulkier framework than the series 2 fan, and also too big to fit on the series 2 radiator.
What kind of shop will I find aftermarket radiator fans in? I don't remember seeing them in shops like Halfords (shudder). _________________ Hugh B

OK. How about a Series 3 fan AND radiator
Surely that must work unless the series 2 metalwork is different. _________________ 16v p4 In pieces. |

Oh I see
Is the problem that on the Series 3 the radiator is mounted forward of the front cross member, and on the series 2 it isn't _________________ 16v p4 In pieces. |

MK5/6 Escort radiator fans are about 4cm deep, u'd need to fabricate a bracket but they are easily avaliable. |

Exactly. See here:
There is no room for either the series 2 OR series 3 fans between the engine and the radiator. The only place seems to be on the front of the radiator, between it and the front plastic grille. The fan must also be slim enough to allow the Veloce bumper to fit properly. Tough task!

Sounds about right Gary, I'll give it a go. With all luck it'll fit.
Any other suggestions just in case? _________________ Hugh B

I have 2 fans Fitted - 1 inner and 1 outer. It's a 1.7 8V conversion on a 1.5 box in an 86. I haven't made any brackets as yet and they are held on by cable ties **shrinks into chair and pulls face**. No, the cable ties didn't melt after 20,000. Km's of procrastination. The fans were given to me and I don't know what they came out of. I have a low temp switch fitted too. All works beautifully.
I can't post any pics on the forum so I sent some to your email.

stumbled across a pic of my engine while trying to find the other.
Being this shinny it's easily good for 500HP+
if your engine is clean it makes it alot easier to find any sort of oil leak and it's much more pleasant to work on. Plus it goes faster

I wish my engine looked like that...
Mine looks so ugly... the only thing that is clean is the inlet manifold...
Matt, would you like to clean mine (just a thought )
all the best

Hugh, try Demon Tweeks for Kenlowe fans. They stock them.

It's funny just spoken to my dad and he mentioned Kenlowe... must be a sign
Jas, I got the pictures. That solution looks fine, who cares about the cable ties. As long as they cool the thing down it doesn't matter. Would you not get away with just one fan though?
Matt's solution looks very pro. It must get hot there!! _________________ Hugh B

In relation to your Harmonic balancer and radiator, the gap is a little small and make changing pulleys somewhat near impossible. here is a cheap and easy fix.
Simply cut on the red lines and fold on the yellow. Fold steal under.
2 whole minutes with a hacksaw and hey presto, take care not to get to excited with the saw as you will soon have a leak! _________________ Molto Veloce! |

A maker of the sort of fans you need is Davies Craig in Australia. Have a look at http://www.daviescraig.com.au. They should ba available through most of the aftermarket shops such as Repco, Autobarn, Super Cheap (you are in Sydney aren't you?). You will need two 10 inch fans. If I get a chance, I will look up a model number for you. They are the same fans as on the air conditioning condensers on the Series 3 in the front guards (I don't know about Series 2).
When I did my Sprint, I had the option of putting the fans in front of the radiator or moving the radiator forward. I chose to move the radiator forward about 50mm, which was a bit tricky but not all that difficult.

Sorry, I've just looked at your entry again and see that you are in the UK. Davies Craig fans may still be available there.

Does anyone know what the CFM rating of the standard series 2 radiator fan is? _________________ Hugh B

There are loads of aftermarket companies that do radiator fans. They start at about 9" diameter I think. Look in the back of Kit Car magazine fro plenty of adverts. Personally, I reckon you would be better moving the rad forwards. Pull type fans are more efficient than push versions...
Online, you could try merlin motorsport...
