Hi there,
Just filled up with Shell Optimax after being slightly disappointed with the performance of my "new" 1987 1.5 33 and the difference immediately is superb - much better acceleration and response - it put a smile on my face all the the way home. Here in Australia it is 10 cents more per litre, but I think the fun factor, plus the fact it is better for the engine (cleans it as you drive) and boosts mpg slightly means it is worth it. Have any of you tried it yet?

I have been using it for some time and am happy with it. I changed the octane setting on the engine computer to get maximum advantage. Fuel consumption was about 11 Km per litre before the speedo went on the blink.

How do you do that?

Matthew

There is an electric bridge that looks like a relay in the bulkhead area in front of the firewall. It can be replaced or modified to set the computer mapping for various octane ratings. Have a look on Scott Sander's site at http://sanderfamily.com/

Look under alfa things then ignition advance. (ed. mod)

Regards

I use BP ultimate in my 33 16v, and is the only fuel that is actually 98RON, Optimax is 97RON.

Errol, you must be sold short in Australia! In the UK Optimax is greater than 98 RON and is supposed to be the highest octane rating sold in the UK. Although if you can use leaded (i.e. no cat), then that is about 99/100 RON as they start with unleaded and add to it. But it's not easy to find and is not cheap. I once paid 95p per litre!

I only run my 1.5V engine on Optimax and it runs fine. The previous owner used to add octane booster to Lead Replacement Petrol. I haven't tried BP although that is the nearest one. Maybe will give it a go.

Regards

Richard

I too have started to take the Optimax route.

My 1.7 boxer engine kept "sludging" up, requiring oil changes about every 5000km to keep it quiet(ish!)...

I've found it to be a little quicker and I think better for the engine.

Different country Different petrol! Its been tested here and they only got 97RON out of it. BP ultimate was the only one that had a 98RON rating. Very Happy

The relay modification on sanderfamily.com

Does it imply for 97RON fuel the relay should be removed?!?!?

Is this the same for the 8v engine?!
