Hi i was thinking of making some home made parts from fiber-glass... The thing is i really don't know how easy this is..Is there somebody here that has worked with such material, or can even recommend an easier and better solution. What i basically want to do is make my own front hood and spoiler. Plus i could for starters try and fix the little crack i have on my front bumper. So if anybody has any ideas or solutions then please speak up. for now i believe that fiber glass is the easiest to mold and the best solution but like i said if somebody know better materials then please let me know thnx |

Hi, this is quite an involved subject and the reading of reference material from your local library would be necessary. Basically however, you need to make a female mold of your bonnet etc. and then mold your finished component from this. The pattern you use to take your female mold from must be MINT as your end result will be a direct reflection of this. Release agents and gel coats are involved and reinforcing of both the mold and the finished unit are necessary as well as provision for catches and hinges etc. Polyesters are extremely temp. and humidity sensitive as to mix ratios.
Polyester fibreglass does not adhere well to the plastics used in bumpers and will seperate over time. However such a repair molded to the inside can be effectively glued to the bumper using a Urethane adhesive sealer making a bond that will last thus providing a permanent solution. Shaped Aluminium could also be bonded the same way for a longterm repair. The bonding agent must be Urethane not a Silicone or modified Silicone as they do not have the same strength. Hope this helps.
