How does the oil filter come off?

hi guys how does the oil filter come off...does it get unscrewed or does it somehow "pop" out...and do i need some special toold for it? thnx

It unscrews (anticlockwise), may be pretty tight.

You can get various tools to make removal easier - metal ones which fit the indentations on the end of the filter, but you need a different one for each size filter, and metal or fabric strap wrenches which wrap around the filter body.

Cheapest, rather messy, way is to drive a large screwdriver right through the old filter and use this as a lever to turn and loosen it

New filter should not be tightened with any tool, follow the instructions on the filter. Usually hand tight only, or 3/4 turn after seal ring touches base.

I helped remove one recently which had been overtightened, and the filter body separated from the centre thread as it was unscrewed. Would have been disatrous if it had split when engine was running!
