|
|
Hi,
in the post about the smoke from the exhaust (scroll down the forum) one of you (a guest) mentioned that it's possible to replace the valve stem seals without removing the heads. Has anyone done it before? Could you give me some details how to get the seal out and back in, and what are other unusual things to take care of?
Thanks

I have replaced VSS on a Citroen with the head still on but I fabricated a spring compressor from an old one and that required welding (as you cant get under the head as usual to 'push' against the valve heads). The valve top was held with pliers as the spring was compressed. Then just cut off the old ones relaced the new one's, the trickiest bit was fitting the collets as the valve had to be pulled up with snipe nose pliers as the spring was compressed down. |

Hi
I think the "professional" way to do it is using an adaptor for the spark plug hole to fill the cylinder with very high preasure air to hold the valve closed so that you can then compress the springs and remove the collets.
Not sure I would trust my compressor for that
All the best

Nah, the bodgeit way is to shove some rope through the plug hole into the cylinder and hope that holds the valve in place
All the best

Yeah, probably that's the best way to do it. But what about turning the cranckshaft so, that the cilinder supports the valve? Will it end up with replacing the valves as well?

That will help but to actually remove the collets the valve must be fully closed |
