Hi all,
Can anyone tell me the amount of oil i'm going to need to do an oil change on my gearbox? and also what grade is recommended by alfa?
Giving it a 'little' overhaul before spring alfa day |

Hi Lee,
I use 80W/90 transmission oil. You'll need about 2.6 litres.
Hope that helps. (Think I've got that right! Compare it to the amount which comes out when draining)

Cheers Bob,
The logical thing would be to drain it and see how much is in there, but i just wanted to know so i've got enough to hand to avoid 'walking' to Halfords.
How's the restoration going? Is that list shorter now? |

Hmmm.... knocked three things off - and added six!!!!
Standard stuff really!
Had an interesting weekend - took someone out in the 33, and he said "hey Bob.... I've got white knuckles now"!!!
That sod still hasn't got back to me about the cost of the respray/bodywork correction. I've called him too. I'm guessing he doesn't wanna do it for ANY money (who can blame him!?).
I'll start looking somewhere else - unless John wants to borrow it for a while!?!?!?
Actually John (if you're about) - how much might it really cost me - and would you wanna do it?!
Cheerz folks,

I changed my gearbox oil two weeks ago. I had just over two litres of oil plus a tube of additive ready to go in the gearbox, but I ended up cycling to a petrol station to buy more oil!
Chances are your gearbox leaks (from where the selector shaft goes in, and it'll drip onto the exhaust to make a nice burning smell), so it may be best to go by the manual (which says 2.6 litres of oil) rather than by the amount you get out of the gearbox.
Also I hear a fancy fully-synthetic oil will really improve the gearbox, versus just putting in a mineral oil of the recommended grade. I'm still waiting for the additive I put in with my oil to do magic and fix up my dodgy old gearbox for me, but so far it has managed only minor improvements.. |

Hey Ben,
It's additive - not magic! LOL!

I have tried only mineral and full synth oils in my gearbox.
But from what I can hear most of people that put in additive or used semi-synth oil had same reactions as those that used fully synth.
So I don't think even if you were to replace it with fully synth you would gain anything but extra cost. _________________ Tino Vatavuk
