Okay, it's time to play 'name that hose'!

What's that disconnected pipe resting on the rear axle, and should it be connected to anything?

I don't know about the hose Ben, but does your fuel tank leak?

It's a breather from the top of the filler pipe There is another pipe from there which goes back to the tank. On both my cars it is tucked into a hole in the chassis cross beam just above where the end is in your pic.

Does the tank leak? Don't think so. Sometimes I think I've noticed a bit of a damp patch on the right just out of this photo, but other times it's not there. So I'm not going to look too hard incase I find a problem. Wink

Those marks on your pic look remarkably like holes. Is this a joke? Or has someone sealed the bottom of the tank with something, or "rubber bagged" it?

Looks like holes to me as well Confused

Here is a pic of the fuel tank on my 33. Note that there are no holes, but my tank is in poor condition, especially on the top (could spike it with a scewdriver if I wanted, I am sure). What is the top of your tank like Ben?

http://www.granger-marketing.com/alfa33/fueltank.jpg

Shocked

Reminds me, I should clean and respray my rear axle with Tectyl.

Hi,

Paddy, this is exactly the picture that my fuel tank used to look like some months ago that it leaked.

Brown deposits on the bottom which in fact was rust from the inside.

Ben i think its time you have your tank replaced Confused

Regards,

Paddy, what are those shiny bits on your exhaust pipe - heat shields? - or patches?

Dick, those are heat shields. Since the car has been lowered, they seem to resonate on certain pavee road surfaces due to the new frequencies.

Thanassis, yes the tank is a bit rusty. Underneath, the car smells of petrol (perhaps just the breather) and I noticed that when looking at the tank from the front it looks slighly worse. Will ask my trusty Classic Alfa mechanic next time I see him.

Here are some more slightly random pictures I just took. Car is inside our warm garage right now, and can't get underneath it like I used to be able to due to suspension being 30mm lower. When I was 14 I went underneath and cleaned every part in sight. It used to be shiny red (and still is in certain areas)!

Seem to be some new surface rust spots I wasn't aware about Sad

I've just updated the picture with some yellow arrows. If you're not seeing the yellow arrows you will need to reload the image so your browser isn't using an old cached copy.

Rflower - are those the patches you're talking about? They aren't holes, they're just spots where the underseal which coats the tank has been chipped off. The tank is dark shiny metal underneath, like paddy's one is all over. If I had holes that big in the tank, I wouldn't make it to work and back each day! Shocked

paddy - I don't know what the top of the tank looks like, I can't see it because the tank is attached to the car! Wink

P.S. HERES HOW 2 MAKE UR ALFA GO FASTER
TAKE THE INTAKE BIT OFF UR AIRBOX IT LOOKS LIKE THIS:
http://www.axys.co.nz/ben/alfa33/INTAKE1.JPG
OPEN UP THE CLIPS SO IT SPLITS IN 2 AND U CAN TAKE OUT THE VALVE THING INSIDE. ITS PROBABLY BROKEN ANYWAY LIKE MINE WAS AND IT RESTRICTS UR AIRFLOW. THEN TAPE UP THE HOLES AND CHOP THE TOP OF A COKE BOTTLE AND TAPE IT ON LIKE THIS
http://www.axys.co.nz/ben/alfa33/INTAKE2.JPG
THIS WILL CHANEL THE AIR GOOD AND U CAN THEN FIT ON A VERY BIG AIR INTAKE PIPE LIKE THIS
http://www.axys.co.nz/ben/alfa33/INTAKE3.JPG
CUT A PEICE OF AND TAPE IT ON AND PUT IT ALL BACK IN UR ALFA IT SHOULD LOOK LIKE THIS
http://www.axys.co.nz/ben/alfa33/INTAKE4.JPG
NOW U WILL HAVE 20HP XTRA @ THE BACK WHEELS AND U WILL HAVE A FULL SIK INTAKE NOISE AND CAN BEAT UR MATES WRX'S AND EVOS.

Hi Ben,

Yes, those are the places I referred to. You wouldn't get out of the driveway if they were holes! (That's why I thought it might be a joke)

Presumably only some tanks have underseal, unless all the cars I've seen have had new tanks fitted..., pity they didn't do the straps as well!

Rusting from inside can be reduced by keeping the tank as full as possible, to reduce air content so there is less "breathing", and resulting condensation of water inside, with temperature changes. There is more temperature variation with fuel injection, as warm fuel is returned to the tank. Maybe fit a cooler in the return line?

I just fitted a near new tank on my 33 from a maybe 5 year old (when it was wrecked) 33. Would have been a good idea to protect it with a good epoxy coating, but I can't face removing it again at the moment. I'll coat it if I eventually fit it on the Sprint. We don't get so much rain here anyway, no snow, or salt on the roads, and I don't intend going anywhere where it snows in winter.

I bought the 33 as a donor car for the Sprint, but getting too fond of it to break it up, especially since I found so many good cheap parts in my local wrecker's. Fortunately they are not allowed to sell complete cars, or I'd have even less space in my garage!

Um, it is a carb model - isn't the filter built on top of the carb?

The filter is in the black tin box with Alfa Romeo written on it, in the last picture.

As RFlower said, the filter's in the black box with red 'Alfa Romeo' writing on. It's a panel filter, the air enters from the bottom, goes up through the filter then out to the carbs.
I know the 33's not RWD. I guess you've gotta frequent a few boyracer forums.. If someone says they've got some silly accessory or modification which gives them an extra 10hp at the flywheel, some newbie will come along claiming their mod gives 15hp at the front wheels. And how do you beat that? 20hp at the steering wheel? 25hp at the spare wheel? Cool

Ah - I'm not that familiar with the pre S3 models. Sounds like a good mod!
