Luke,
Car looks very nice indeed. Nice to hear you haven't added any other mods (yet), as I like to see original 33's. Nice original wheels too. |

Hi,
Wow indeed a very nice looking car - especially if it is kept outside the house avoiding all the possibilities of hits or thefts!.
I hope you store Alfa under the shelter in the position of the blue Suzuki
By the way, the headlight washer seen on the pics, is it an effective one? People have told that more or less it is aesthetic rather than operational. If the headlight is dirty then the washer can't do much...
Is it possible for you to post pics from the engine compartment or the interior?

never really checked the headlight washers. i'll have a play and let you know. my last p4 didnt have them so i've not lived with them long.
i've got a pic but its got my random scriblings on it. i'll post it anyway.
no pics of the inside yet. i'll sort some out, but its very clean stock perm 4 except for 2 speakers in the rear doors
the shelter is where the pulsar lives and the old man's porsche. the alfa and all the other cars have to sit in the rain.
thank god i live in a very low crime area. its got an alarm etc anyway.

sorry, no idea. it came with the car when my brother got it.
you could download the pic and take it to your local sign writers. they can do car stickers for not a lot of cash.

Nice car.
I did a similar thing with a pod filter (had to, the Alfa one wouldn't fit under the Sprint bonnet) but I put it on the end of some ducting so it located immediately behind the RH headlight. I then fitted an aluminium plate on the vertical frame between the headlight and the radiator to minimise the amount of hot air from the radiator and engine. Seems to work OK and doesn't involve cutting large holes in wheel arch panels that would only put it behind an air conditioning condenser on my car anyway.
Look after it.

john boy, you need web space to host the pics. email them to me and i'll host them for ya.
ken, there is a hole in the 33's inner wing anyway. its not quite big enough but every little helps. i was thinking of either a bonnet vent to help or taking out the indicators and putting some smaller ones in the bumper. blank the left side off and use the right hand one for air intake.
if i force induct the car then i'll do a bonnet vent. but i'll make my own bonnet so i dont have to cut up the original. so it can be put back to stock if needed.

Does the hole come out behind the air conditioning condenser, or don't you have air conditioning? the air on the downstream side af an air conditioning condenser can be quite hot.
I have been thinking of bonnet vents too and am looking for a way to do it without it looking like a wank and spoiling the car. With the flat front of the engine and cam belt covers being very close behind the radiator on my car, and an engine bay full of equipment, the air path is quite restrictive. Perhaps I should flop mould the bonnet, do a carbon fibre one and build the vents in?

yeh i'd make your own bonnet. stick a proper NACA duct in it for best low resistance air intake.
do a google search for the formula to get it right.
a carbon, even wet-lay, bonnet would be lighter than the stock one so there is more power to the wheels stright away

If it was in Alfa Red it would look even better.
Only problem is water being sucked into engine and causing problems like this.

Yes indeed, it would look better in red!! The metal-pipe will get the same color as the block.
Well, the problem with water coming into the engine shouldn't be a problem as long as the car is being used every day. In fact I don't hope so... _________________ Alfa 33 1.7 16v '88 QV

Ken,I've been looking at louvres in the bonnet as well. I think they could improve airflow through the radiator by extracting. Many of the racing guys complain of overheating with power increases and some resort to propping the rear edge of the bonnet open slightly to help. This has always seemed the wrong way to go about it as you woud be trying to extract into what is generally a higher pressure area. I had two small panels of louvres sitting on the bonnet of our white car the other day trying to figure out where to site them for best efficiency and discreet appearance. Of course I forgot they were still there when I next had to go somewhere in the car. Where they departed I have no idea. Oops.

Eddie
That is more or less what I was thinking. Propping the bonnet is not a good idea because it will let engine air in through the cabin air intakes and may cause more noise in the cabin. Also, just in front of the windscreen is a high pressure area, which is why the cabin intakes are located there.
I had in mind grille type vents over the radiator expansion tank on the left and the same location on the right (on unmodified cars, over the air filter box), just in front of the bulkhead. The Sprint has black plastic grille vents just in front of the windscreen for the cabin air intakes and it may be possible to do something that looks similar to them.
Rain water is a consideration but providing there is nothing electric or electronic directly under the vents, I don't think this should be too much of a problem. After all, a lot of water splashes up on the bottom part of the engine bay from the front wheels.
