hey all,

i've recently learnt a lot more about the insides of gearboxes. to further my knowlege i'd like to take one apart and rebuild it.
is this a DIY job? assuming that the box is mostly working when i start working on it, do i need hundreds of pounds worth of parts or are they all quite cheap?
any special tools? i have an extensive socket set, rachet spanners and a torque wrench.

also any gearbox manuals/info would be good. any one knwo where i might downloads some?
i'd like to rebuild a perm 4 box but only if i can find one cheap. failing that any 5 speed fwd 33 box will do.

Hi,

I am able to supply you with the manual you need for your box. Wizz knows deeply about rebuilding gearboxes.

Regards,

Hi LDA.

Have a look at this thread: Anybody tried fixing the synchro on the gearbox? - I did! Smile.
The parts I used, worth approx. £250:
- 5 Synchronizing rings
- 1 Speed control fork (the one between 1st and 2nd was pretty busted)
- 1 Nut (The big one at the outer part of the axle)
- The usual assortment of gaskets and stuff.

Special tools: No, not really. But you do need a rather large wrench for the nut at the rear of the main axle.

Having done it myself, I'd say it's a DIY job. Razz

hey wizz.

i spent ages last night reading you topic on your gearbox rebuild. very good stuff. i also down loaded all of the photos Smile
i think i'll have a go myself. i may need to ask back here once i have the box in bits to work out exactly what new spare parts i need. but i spose thats all part of the learning process.

any one know if there are any uprated synchro's for our box or ones that could be put in from another box? it would be nice to prolong the life of my rebuilt box as long as possible.

Hi again.

Glad you liked the photos and have the guts to give it a try. Smile
I've heard of someone using the syncros from a Fiat Punto.. But I don't know whether that would be an improvement or not. I suspect they might just be similar to the 33 ones.
