Hi there,

We are in the process of repairing the panhard bar to body mount on our Alfasud. It almost looks as if the mount has been "twisted" off around the axis of the panhard bar? I'm wondering what could cause this to happen... could it simply be the twisting motion of the axle? The bar still has rubber bushes as I was told not to fit stiffer bushes for rally use, it didnt seem to help much though.
The mount was really just about to fall off I'm surprised we didnt notice it earlier.

Any thoughts?

Jez

Hi Jez, are you saying that the mount is being twisted off in a fore and aft direction? If so it is hard to conceive how it could be loaded in such a direction. I would suggest looking at a rose joint at the axle end and retaining the rubber at the chassis end. This system worked fine on my Escort.
Regards Eddie

Hi Eddie,

It does look that way, but it is hard to tell exactly. We are planning to remove the springs and test the full motion of the suspension without the panhard bar... so as to get a clear picture of the axle movements.

What was the reason for retaining the rubber bush?

Hi Jez, just budget really and a touch of shock absorbency. It was rosejointed at the axle end with the rosejoint in the horizontal plane. The longer the panhard, the less physical deflection of the axle. Also the height that the panhard mounts on the axle determines the roll centre height at the rear.
Regards Eddie
